I run sit in the cold water for probably the hundredth time. I let go and slide toward the waterfall. Right before I slide over the top, Josh extends his hand next to me for a high five. I try to hit it but barely graze the side of his hand. That was pathetic.
I feel the water rush over my face and for a second I don't move. I just float there weightless in the water. When I pop back up, Josh comes splashing into the water right next to me. I wait for him to come back up. Then I feel his hand wrap around my ankle and I get sucked under the water. I fight to get away because I wasn't able to get a breath before going under. I finally kick off his hand I fight my way to the surface.
I breath in the refreshing air and turn to him. He emerges out of the water right in front of me. "What was that?"
"Pay back."
"For what?"
"I'm not sure yet, but I'm sure you've done something." I shake my head and swim towards the edge. I pull myself up onto the bank and splash through the waterfall into the cave. Shivering, I set the wood in place and start a fire. I sit down and try to warm my cold toes and fingers. My mind travels back to Jonny. I tried to come up with a over all impression of him but he was a complete mystery to me. Stacy said he was a player. What's a player? I guess since she said it as a bad thing I should probably stay away.
Josh comes splashing through the waterfall just as my toes are getting arm. "Hey." I say.
"Hey." he says. He sits down next to me and puts his raisin-like fingers and toes close to the fire. "So who was that guy you were with earlier?"
"Oh, that. That was Jonny. Stacy had to go to work for some other guy. He volunteered to take me to take my tests." He nods but doesn't say anything. "Why?" I ask.
"No reason. He just seemed a little to interested in you."
"I noticed."
"You aren't going to actually gonna go on a date with that guy are you?"
"What? No. Why would I go on a date with him? He hasn't even asked me out or anything."
"He kind of did."
"No he didn't."
"Ok whatever. But if he did, would you go with him?"
"I don't know. I don't even really know him." Why does he even care?
He smiles a playful grin. "Well, you did move in with me the day you met me."
I punch him in the arm. "That's different. And I didn't move in with you. I stayed in a tent close to you."
"Ok. Well, just trust me, he's bad news."
"How do you know?"
"I just do." He smiles and obviously wants to change the subject. I wiggle my now warm toes and put my hands on my hot face trying to cool it off. "You warm?" he asks.
"Yeah actually." He smirks and I try to figure out what he's thinking. He stands up, and before I am able to do anything he has scooped me up into his arms. "What are you doing?" I ask. I don't mean to giggle but it slips out. He doesn't answer he just smiles towards the waterfall. "Don't you dare!" He takes off running towards the waterfall. I bury my head in his shoulder as we splash through the water. He lets go of me once we are in the water. I splash out of the water and splash him wildly.
He laughs and splashes me back. Brian jumps into the water from off the top of the waterfall right next to us. Stacy and Brent swim over to us, and we all fight in an epic splash war. We all decide on a truce and go into the cave to warm up before walking back.
On the way back the boys walk ahead of Stacy and I. "So, Still don't believe me?" She nudges my elbow.
"Believe what?"
"That Josh likes you of course!" She blurts out.
"Stacy! Shhhh!" I see Josh turn a little bit and glance back at us. I feel my face turn red and I look away. Stacy just smiles and keeps walking.
We are almost to the V compound when Jonny meets us in the street. "Don't go inside. They found us."
"Who?" Brent asks.
"The Violet Patrol."
