Anthony reached the bathroom and swiftly removed the eye pad, revealing the star in all its glowing glory. However, instead of its usual bright gold hue, the star now radiated an intense red glow. As he hesitantly touched it, he yelped in pain, the scorching heat searing his skin. The touch intensified the already overwhelming pain in his head and caused the star's glow to flare up even brighter, intensifying the torment he was already enduring.
Anthony clutched at his head, his breathing ragged and labored as he tried to make sense of the situation. The pain from the star had reached a crescendo, each surge sending jolts of agony through his body. He glanced at his reflection in the mirror, the star's ominous glow reflected back at him, its red light casting a sickly pallor over his features. Fear and desperation clawed at his heart, and he whispered to himself, "What's happening... Why is it red? Why is it hurting so much more than before?"
Anthony's words echoed in the tiled room as he puzzled over the star's abnormal behavior. "Why is it acting like this now...?" he whispered, his voice laced with fear and confusion. Before he could formulate any further thoughts, another shard erupted from the star, shattering the mirror in a violent display. The shard was unlike the previous ones, its color now an ominously red hue, and it steamed as it lay against the broken glass. The star, as if responding to some unknown command, transformed back to its normal golden glow. Anthony, still reeling from the recent onslaught of pain, felt a sense of relief as the torment subsided. A brief moment of respite washed over him, offering a much-needed break from the previous agony. He leaned against the wall, taking slow, deep breaths to steady himself and gather his composure.
Anthony's breathing gradually steadied as he processed the unexpected transition. The star's change back to its original luster left him pondering the mysterious forces at work. He gingerly touched the area around his eye, testing for any lingering pain, but thankfully found that the hurt had subsided with the star's transformation. As Anthony finished adjusting the eye pad, he suddenly found himself face to face with Lucas in the hallway. The unexpected encounter made him jump, and he instinctively blurted out, "Oh, Lulu! You scared me..." A mix of surprise and relief coursed through him as he looked at Lucas, grateful for the familiar presence amidst the chaos he had experienced.
Lucas's concern was evident as he approached Anthony, "Hey, Andy. I was just checking up on you. You seemed like something was wrong with your eye. Are you alright?"Anthony, feeling a mix of gratitude and guilt for worrying his friends, paused for a moment before responding. He hesitated for a beat but ultimately decided to stick to his original lie."Yeah, I'm fine," he assured Lucas, attempting to sound nonchalant, "Just a headache, that's all. Nothing to worry about." Lucas's gaze lingered on Anthony for a moment, skepticism evident in his expression. He knew Anthony well enough to sense when something was off."Are you sure that's all it is?" Lucas probed, "You've been acting strange all day."
Lucas's grip on Anthony's wrist was firm yet gentle, pulling him back just enough to prevent him from walking away. A flicker of determination gleamed in Lucas's eyes as he held Anthony in place. "Hold on a minute," Lucas said, his voice soft yet unwavering. "Don't try to brush it off with 'nothing.' There's clearly something bothering you." Anthony finally yielded, his gaze averted towards the ground. "Okay, fine... But promise me you won't tell anyone. Alright?"Lucas's expression softened as he recognized Anthony's vulnerability. He nodded, his voice reassuring. "I promise. Your secret's safe with me."
Anthony led Lucas into the bathroom, quietly closing the door behind them. The tension in the air was palpable as he turned to face his friend, a mix of vulnerability and trepidation evident in his eyes. "So, there's this thing..." he began, his voice quivering with anxiety. With a trembling hand, he removed the eye pad, revealing the star. The golden star shone faintly, a stark contrast to the stark and sterile surroundings. Lucas's eyes widened with fascination as he caught sight of the star. With a mix of curiosity and hesitation, he extended a hand, hovering it over the star."Can I touch it?" he asked, his voice tinged with awe. Anthony, after a moment of hesitation, nodded. "Sure," he replied, his voice barely above a whisper.
Lucas's hand gently made contact with the star, and as he did, a shower of glittering particles erupted from it. The delicate specks shimmered in the air, momentarily captivating both boys as they watched in awe. Lucas withdrew his hand, his eyes wide with wonder. "Whoa..." he murmured, his voice filled with a mix of amazement and bewilderment. Lucas continued to gaze at the star with wonderment, his curiosity piqued. "How did this happen?" he inquired, his voice tinged with intrigue. Anthony shrugged, his expression a mixture of resignation and bewilderment. "Well, I woke up with it," he admitted, a hint of disbelief in his voice. Lucas took a moment to process the information, his expression growing more concerned with each passing moment. "Have you told your mom?" he asked. Anthony shook his head adamantly, his demeanor turning anxious. "She found out herself," he replied.
The bell rang, interrupting their conversation momentarily. Lucas looked up at Anthony with a mixture of anxiety and curiosity. "Maybe I can come over later and we can talk this out and figure out what happened?" he suggested. Anthony nodded, appreciating the offer of support. "Sure," he agreed. With that, they both left the bathroom, making their way towards their final class of the day.
AFTER SCHOOL
As Anthony entered his room, he was immediately struck by the state of disarray. His eyes widened in surprise, and he let out a perplexed expression. "What the- huh?" he mumbled, his confusion growing as he looked down to find a purple cat plush doll meowing and licking his shoes. Anthony scolded the plush cat with a mixture of annoyance and resignation. "I told you guys to stay put!" he scolded, his voice carrying a hint of frustration. The plush cat's expression turned sad, its eyes gleaming with remorse. Anthony sighed and placed the plush on the bed, his irritation dissipating slightly. Anthony quickly pulled open the door, revealing Lucas standing on the other side. But before Lucas could finish his greeting, his attention was immediately drawn to something else. "Hey, An- whoa," he started to say, but his voice trailed off as his eyes widened in surprise. "What's up with your-" he began to ask, his gaze shifting to something within the room.
Anthony chuckled humorlessly and quickly cut Lucas off before he could finish. "Yeah, yeah, I know the room's a mess," he admitted, frustration evident in his tone. The purple cat plush, seemingly having a fascination with shoes, noticed Lucas and promptly jumped down to attend to his shoes as well, licking them enthusiastically. Anthony's eyes bulged slightly as he watched the plush cat's antics. "Uh, sorry about that," he apologized sheepishly. "I think they like you" Anthony said, smiling. Lucas's disbelief was apparent as he observed the plush cat's animated behavior. He looked at Anthony, his eyebrows raised in a mixture of surprise and curiosity. "Your plushies are alive?" he asked incredulously.
Anthony's response was matter of fact as he answered Lucas's question. "It's the star," he said simply, gesturing towards the star on his forehead. Lucas looked bewildered, trying to process the information. "The star.... it did this?" he asked, pointing towards the plush cat. Anthony elaborated, motioning towards the pile of plushies, each engaged in their own little activity."Yeah, and it's not just that one," he said. "All of them are." As if on cue, the plushies all turned their attention towards Lucas, their wide eyes fixating on him in unison. As Lucas pondered aloud about the numerous plushies, his question was abruptly cut off by a sudden barrage of playful attacks. The plushies leaped onto him with fervor, a whirlwind of cuddling, licking, and playful swipes. Lucas let out a scream, overwhelmed by the unexpected onslaught.
