Sophie sat crisscrossed on the floor, a blanket draped around her shoulders, shrouded in a gentle silence.

Amy's footsteps were nearly silent as she joined her sister on the floor. She scooted closer as a blanket drew her in.

They sat there as credits on a TV screen rolled, some long forgotten movie from their childhood.

"Are you ever gonna to tell me what happened?" Amy's voice was barely more than a whisper. Her eyes trailed over to the dress that hung from the bathroom door on a hanger in all of its silky glory.

When Amy's glance returned back to her sister, Sophie's eyes were already there.

"Do you remember Fitz?" Sophie asked in a hushed whisper, like his name would summon him if she said it too loudly.

"How could I forget?" Amy nudged her with a sly smile. Realization crept into the faint smile lines on her face. "I swear if he hurt you I'll-!"

"No," Sophie sighed, nestling closer to the blanket and her sister. "Amy. He didn't do anything wrong, it was me. I just..."

Amy reached for her hand, and the interlocking of their fingers gave Sophie the courage to speak.

"We...kissed at his winnowing gala, which is great! But everyone saw and I've just been so stressed with work and my parents and..." She inhaled a deep breath. "It's stupid. I made a whole scene and I guess I'm just too scared to go back."

"Yeah, you are pretty stupid." Amy stated simply.

"Hey!"

"But it's ok to be stupid sometimes. You've been through a lot, more than I'll ever know. You can't be perfect all the time, despite what those elves may think."

"Yeah," Sophie sighed. "I just wish things were different. They're not even bad, it just all feels so...sedentary."

"So what are you gonna do to change it?" Amy asked, huge eyes boring back into Sophie's.

Wasn't that the question of the century?

"Why don't you live with mom and dad?" Sophie asked.

Amy just sighed, buried her face in her hands for a second. "I met this guy, and I thought we were going to get married and... I guess we just had different plans."

"I'm sorry." They were simple words, but they were all she could offer.

The title screen on the TV screen looped for the thousandth time and they both watched intently, like their lives depending on them.

"You should probably go back, huh?" Amy rested her head on her sister's shoulder.

"Probably..."

"What are you gonna do when you go back?" They stared at each other for a moment. "I want you to be happy, Sophie."

Her breath caught in her chest as she stared down at her little sister. Her annoying, tattletale of a sister, all grown up.

"I'll figure it out," Sophie smiled gently. She scrunched up her face and reached for Amy's cheeks, pinching them despite her protests. "Gosh when did you get so grown up?"

The somberness melted between them. "Maybe it wouldn't be so drastic if I ever saw you!"

Sophie contemplated that for a while before simply saying, "Yeah."

The sun was rising when Sophie set foot back in Havenfield. Exhaustion racked her body, but her feet carried her through the house as she lost herself in thought.
