Sophie could read forbidden runes from the Black Swan, could read minds even, but she could not for the life of her decipher her students handwriting.
Maybe it was because she couldn't ever read the Elves alphabet, or maybe Foxfire truly needed a penmanship class.
She was on her third hour of staring at her stack of papers, finally down to the last report on transmitting.
How her life came to this she had no idea. Sometimes she felt like she blinked and she was an adult - a real adult with a job and students who counted on her.
She didn't even know what she wanted for her life anymore.
Grady and Edaline always told her how excited they were to get married and have kids, how it was their dream from the moment they could remember.
She never really understood that.
When she was little, she always dreamed of being something great, like a scientist. That was until she had to unlearn all she knew about science and she moved to a world where all she was good at was almost dying and causing drama.
A hand on her shoulder snapped her back to reality, where she quickly rose to her feet and let her fist fly in the direction she assumed her assailant was in.
She came back when a loud thud! rang out in the empty dining room.
On the floor, nursing an injured cheek, was Fitz.
"Fitz!" She screamed in horror, dropping down next to him and grabbing his face in a panic. "I-I'm so sorry!"
He simply laughed, although she could tell from his wince she'd done some damage. "No, no. Just glad you aren't wearing your Sucker Punch."
She nearly forgot that gadget existed, but she brushed it off for the moment. "I'm so sorry, I was a little lost in thought. Grady and Edaline are gone for the weekend won't be back until tonight and I panicked."
He rose to his feet, helping her up when she should have been doing that for him.
"Well, I'm just glad you're alert,"
The next several minutes were spent awkwardly rummaging through a cabinet in her parents bathroom for some sort of elixir to help Fitz.
Things had been going well since the sleepover. She never had a boyfriend before, and she wasn't sure if that's what he was now, but he sure acted like it. Dinners most nights included him and he even volunteered around the pastures, though he wasn't much help. He popped in at work sometimes to treat her to lunch or practice the next topic she'd be teaching.
She retrieved a bottle of Achey-Break after what felt like forever and forced him to chug it despite his reassurances.
"I'm so sorry," she said for the millionth time, plopping down on the floor and hiding her face in her hands.
Fitz slid off the bed and onto the floor next to her, gently loosing her from her ball of shame.
"It's water under the bridge." He smiled his impossibly perfect smile. "Now, I did come over to invite you out."
"Out?"
"On a date?" He rested his hand gently on hers. "I was thinking ice skating?"
Her face flamed. She wasn't sure she'd ever get over the butterflies he gave her."I didn't know elves had ice skates," She laughed.
"Well who do you think invented it?"
Of course the elves invented ice skating. Another thing they invented that she absolutely sucked at.
