Practice had ended, and everyone was heading out the gym. Paige noticed Selah about to leave and jogged over to her.
" Say!" Paige called out, catching up with her. "Wanna stay behind and shoot some hoop wit me?"
Selah raised an eyebrow. "Aren't you tired from practice?"
Paige shrugged, a playful grin on her face. "A little, but if I wanna be in perfect shape for the season."
Selah rolled her eyes but smiled. "Okay, overachiever."
Paige laughed, lowering her head. "Aye, I gotta train like the best to be the best, you know?"
Without thinking, Selah said, "You're already the best."
As soon as the words left her mouth, she realized what she had said and felt a blush creeping up her cheeks. Paige's eyes widened in mock surprise.
"I'm definitely telling KK you said that," Paige teased.
"Please don't!" Selah pleaded, covering her face with her hands and laughing. "I'll never hear the end of it."
Paige chuckled and picked up a basketball, spinning it on her finger. "Alright, let's play horse."
"Alright.' They started playing, Paige went first, making a simple free throw. Selah followed suit, nailing the shot. Next, Paige attempted a layup from the left side, which Selah copied effortlessly.
As the game went on, the shots got more challenging. Paige decided to take a shot from just beyond the three-point line. She dribbled the ball a few times, focused on the hoop, and made the shot with a perfect swish. Selah took a deep breath, stepped up to the same spot, and released the ball. It hit the rim, bounced up, and then fell through the net.
"Okay baller! So you really like that huh?" Paige said surprised when Selah made the shot.
"I can do a lil sum."
"Nice one," Paige said, giving her a nod of approval.
Selah grinned and took a bow. "Thank you. Your turn."
Paige decided to step it up a notch. She stood at the free-throw line, turned around, and shot the ball backward over her head. It bounced off the backboard and went in.
"Beat that," she challenged, winking at Selah.
Selah's jaw dropped. "Seriously? Alright, let's see what I can do."
She positioned herself at the free-throw line, facing away from the hoop. She took a deep breath and shot the ball backward. It soared through the air and hit the backboard, but instead of going in, it bounced off the rim and rolled away.
"Looks like you got an H," Paige said, laughing.
They continued the game, each taking turns and trying to outdo each other with more creative and difficult shots.
