A Cabaret Club: a place where hostesses entertain and sell their company by the hour that, with in-club charges of liquor, keep the business flourishing and bringing in cash.

"A cabaret is for lonely men to buy a nice conversation with a lovely girl,"

"There is a 0 tolerance policy for sexual harassment. Our cabaret girls sell their personality and company, not their body," - Majima Goro ((paraphrased from the game Yakuza 0 cause I'm too lazy to look it up!))

Which was deadlier? Retail work or the Yakuza?

After 5 years of dealing with rude customers, Misako started to wish for the yakuza to take her out on her way into work, or that the subway would run out of juice and crash, or that she'd get hit by a car, or...-

In the grey of mundane existence, the light at the end of her tunnel came from a very strange place:

Cabaret Club Sunshine.

Club Sunshine was all the rage in Sotenbori- the pleasure district of Tokyo. Wandering the streets, Misako found the shining sign of the yellow establishment fighting against the gloom of the city, beckoning her in. A kind hostess by the name of Yuki greeted her. Misako didn't mean to unload her crisis onto the poor woman, but she was simply so friendly and compassionate, it was hard to stop herself from completely and utterly embarrassing herself, and by the time she almost started crying, the hostess was ready with an encouraging solution to her woes:

Apply as a hostess and see if fate was meant to be.

Who was she to say no?

"The owner changed my life," Yuki told her, "He's kind, and protective, and has always treated me in a fatherly way," It sounded too good to be true. "If you ever see him, try not to be afraid, though!" Ah, so there was the catch, "I want to be upfront about him... You know? For your sake. And for his. He's a Yakuza. He looks rough around the edges... but he's a total sweetheart! Well, used to be- ... He's a bit taken by the wind recently. His eye has started to look wild..." her expression darkened as she looked away and she just as quickly recovered her shine and turned back, "He's in there somewhere. Something must've happened to him recently. That's all,"

Recently? Misako stared at her with an arched brow. "Can he be trusted?"

"I talk too much... But yes! At the very least, this place will add some interest to your life, and Majima-san? There's no one quite like him," Yuki promised.

Yakuza or retail? The choice should have been a difficult one, but for the first time in years, Misako felt a thrill in her heart as she walked to her interview that very next day. Brought into the backroom with the floor manager, Youda, the rows of glittery dresses hung up behind her were gawk-worthy, and with vanity mirrors lining the walls with makeup sprawled out at nearly every space in front of them, it seemed the cabaret was its very own ecosystem. A radio played girly pop music. She tried to relax and wiped her sweaty palms on her pants.

Misako had never thought of herself as the pinnacle of femininity, but being a cabaret girl would be like being a bit of an actress, she guessed, taking it all in as she sat in front of the manager. The usual questions came her way. "What are your strengths?" "What are your weaknesses?" "Any hobbies?" and lastly, "Would you do anything for this company?"

The surface level questions were easy enough to bullshit her way through, but "Would I do anything?" she echoed. In complete earnest, the manager repeated himself, pen at the ready behind his clipboard. "...Um... Can you specify?"
