I woke up again and looked at the clock at the bedside table. It said it was four thirty in the morning but everything looked bright to me, as if the sun was out. Then I heard faint footsteps approaching the door. They kept getting louder and louder, their even rhythm like a beat. Minutes later I heard a quiet knock on the door.
"Are you awake?" I heard Landon's voice ask from behind the door.
"Yeah." He opened the door and closed the door slowly. He walked as quietly as possible. He sat down on a chair next to my bed.
"Here, I brought you soup," he said, handing me a mug of something that looked like tomato soup. I took a sip of it and, realizing how hungry I was, drank it fast. "Are you still hungry?" He asked, handing me a napkin.
"No thanks, I'm fine. Thank you though," I smiled.
"No problem. Do you remember anything else that happened or that you think happened?"
"No, not really," I thought for a moment then remembered what Landon had said right before I passed out. 'Don't worry, you're going to be okay. I'm never going to let anyone hurt you,' he had said before he told me to wait in the tree for him.
"What is it?" He asked, looking worried.
"I was just thinking," I hesitated. "Landon, can I ask you something?"
"Okay, what is it?"
"Do you like me?" I asked quietly.
"What do you mean?"
"Do you love me?"
He looked down and was quiet. Then he got up from the chair and walked to the door.
"I'm going to bring more soup," he said, closing the door behind him. I laid back down and looked up at the ceiling. Maybe he was just caught up in the moment, I thought. Maybe he doesn't like me.
Then I heard footsteps in the hall. They stopped at my door but no one opened the door.
"Hello?" I asked. Then the door slowly creaked open.
"Heather? It's me, Jack," he said walking in.
"Oh, hi Jack," I said, staring up at the ceiling again.
"What's wrong?" He asked.
"Nothing," I sighed.
"Oh. Have you tried walking yet? I think you might be able to," he said trying to cheer me up.
"No, I haven't thought about it much," I said, sitting up.
"You could try it. Landon sent me to help you."
I tried to move my leg and was surprised when it moved. Then I tried swinging my legs over the edge of the bed and sat up. I smiled, looking at my now moveable legs.
"See, I told you you could do it," Jack grinned.
"Now let's see if I could walk," I said, trying to stand up. As I stood up, I felt my legs wobble and I fell to the ground, but before I had a chance to hit the ground, Jack swiftly caught me.
"Umm, thank you," I said as he helped me stand up.
"No problem. Now that you're steady, do you think you could walk to me?" He said, walking a few feet away from me.
"Ok, I'll try." I took an unsteady step towards Jack and felt a slight pain in my foot. When the pain eased away, I took another step, then another until I got to Jack.
"See, I told you you could make it," he cheered. "Now that you could walk, want to go to the kitchen with me to get some breakfast?"
"Sure." We walked down the hall, past lots of doors and into a small kitchen. There was a stove, a fridge, a small sink, and a small table along with cupboards that aligned the wall.
"What would you like for breakfast?" He asked.
"I'm not really hungry," I say as I lean on the counter. I look blankly into space as I tried to remember what happened last night. "Jack?" I finally spoke after what seemed like hours of silence. "Do you remember what happened last night?"
"I don't know," he said, taking a sip from his mug. "Do you mean the werewolf attack?"
"I mean everything. The werewolf attack, and what happened after. Right before I passed out."
"I don't remember a thing," he said blankly, taking a sip from his mug again.
"Good morning," Landon said, walking in. "Jack, I need to talk to you later." He said sternly. Jack groaned and walked out of the room, looking down as if he did something wrong.
I watch as he walks out of the room. "Is something wrong?" I ask Landon.
"No, he's fine. He probably already has an idea of what I'm going to talk to him about though."
"What are you going to talk to him about?"
"I'm thinking about having you homeschooled." He says plainly. "Not just any school though, it's vampire training."
"What?!?" I couldn't believe what I just heard. Did he say vampire?
"Yeah, vampire school. You're lucky I'm not sending you to the academy. It's terrible. Jack hated it. He also hated the teacher that's going to be teaching you."
I still couldn't believe it. I stood there, not sure what to say.
"You better go get ready," Landon said, smiling. "The teacher's going to be here any second now," he said leaving the room.
I can't believe I'm actually going to be homeschooled. It's not even a normal school, it's a vampire homeschool!
