Cecilia spent the next few days in a state of emotional turmoil, trying to avoid Kaelin's persistent texts and calls. His confession had left her feeling raw and confused, and she needed time to process everything. Caleb had been more attentive than ever, perhaps sensing the fragile state of their relationship, but Cecilia couldn't shake the feeling of dread that loomed over her.
Each day, Cecilia's phone buzzed with messages from Kaelin, but she couldn't bring herself to respond. His words from the voicemail replayed in her mind, creating an emotional echo chamber she couldn't escape from. The texts varied from apologies to pleas for a conversation, to simple "I miss you" notes that tugged at her heartstrings.
One rainy afternoon, Cecilia was sitting on her couch, a book in hand but not really reading. Caleb had come over to check on her, sensing her distress. They were talking quietly about their plans for the weekend when a loud knock interrupted them. Cecilia's heart skipped a beat, already suspecting who it might be.
Caleb stood up to answer the door, his expression guarded. When he opened it, Kaelin stood on the threshold, soaked from the rain, a look of determination in his eyes.
Kaelin looked momentarily taken aback to see Caleb. "Caleb, why are you here?" he asked, glancing past him to see Cecilia standing behind him, her eyes wide with apprehension.
Caleb folded his arms across his chest. "I think the better question is, why are you here?"
Cecilia stepped forward, her voice trembling. "Kaelin, please, just leave."
But Kaelin ignored her plea and, with a defiant smirk, looked directly at Caleb. "Probably because she called me a few days ago and told me she loved me. What's she keeping you around for, something pretty to look at?"
Caleb turned to Cecilia, his voice dripping with contempt. "You told him you loved him? How could you?"
"I was upset, and I needed someone to talk to. It's not like that with Kaelin," Cecilia tried to explain, but Caleb was already too angry to listen.
"Not like that? You confessed your love to him! What am I supposed to think, Cecilia?" Caleb's voice was rising, his frustration palpable.
Cecilia tried to reach out to him, but he pulled away. "Caleb, please..."
Caleb's eyes flashed with anger and hurt. "How did you respond to that, Kaelin?" he asked, his voice icy.
Kaelin opened his mouth to reply, but Caleb cut him off. "I know exactly how you responded. You were thrilled. You've always wanted her, haven't you?"
Kaelin glanced at Caleb and then back at Cecilia. "We need to talk, Cee. You can't keep running away from this."
Caleb stepped between them, his anger barely contained. "You've said enough. She doesn't want to talk to you."
Kaelin ignored Caleb and addressed Cecilia directly. "Please, Cee. Just give me five minutes. You owe me that much."
Cecilia's resolve crumbled, and she nodded slowly. "Caleb, could you give us a moment?"
Caleb looked betrayed. "Seriously? You're going to talk to him now?"
"It's just five minutes," Cecilia insisted. "Please, Caleb."
Caleb threw his hands up in frustration and stormed into the other room, leaving the door ajar. Kaelin turned back to Cecilia, his expression softening.
He stepped inside, closing the door behind him. Cecilia turned to him, her anger bubbling over. "How could you? Why would you tell him that?"
Kaelin's face was a mix of guilt and frustration. "Because you're avoiding me, Cee. You can't just drop a bomb like that and then pretend it didn't happen."
