Several days later...
Vault 223 Library Room
"Where do you need me to put these books, Gonta?" Makoto was carrying a stack of books Gonta had given him earlier. Celeste had assigned him to assist the Ultimate Entomologist with his findings today.
"Put them in the ecology section right over there." The giant green-haired man pointed towards the bookshelf section. "Those are Gonta's notes on Wasteland creatures and bugs."
Makoto did not waste any time and began placing the books one by one into the large shelf. He noticed many bookshelves, each filled to the brim with other books of various genres. He then looked at the final book in his hands, labeled "Wasteland Findings". I reckon this could be useful.
"Hey Gonta, you don't mind if I read your notes, do you?"
Gonta chuckled. "Gonta no mind at all. Read Gonta's notes all you want, if you like. But remember to put it back when you're done, because it's very important."
"Thanks." Makoto skimmed through some of the pages, stopping at a page detailing what looked to be a gigantic, mutated hairless bear. What interested the lucky student most was that there was a picture, albeit a non-colorized one, of the malformed bear. Though it had to have been taken from a distance. He looked at the top of the page. Kaibutsu? Looks like a mutated black bear... [You can probably tell this is the Japanese equivalent of the Yao Guai.]
"Woah... you got a picture of it? How the heck did you do that? That thing doesn't look very friendly..."
Gonta answered his question. "Oh, the pictures were taken with a ProSnap camera. Gonta and Rantaro stay far away from big bear, so we got a good photo."
"I didn't know this vault had a camera... or any film to use one..." You'd think they'd have went ca-boom, or would be inoperable.
"Gonta couldn't believe it, either. But one day Leon found it cleaning up storage room. Needed a few tweaks, but it still good to use."
"Ah... that makes more sense..." Makoto looked through more of the book to see what else the vault discovered. He came across another page titled Kachimushi, and below was a picture of a surprisingly giant looking dragonfly. That's a bug?! Geez, Rantaro was right - the bugs are a LOT bigger now. I'm scared to imagine what Murder Hornets look like.
"Hey Gonta, I have a question about this bug." Makoto went over to Gonta and showed him the page. "This one right here, the Kachimushi. What can you tell me about it?"
Gonta looked at the page momentarily, taking a moment to adjust his glasses. "Ah, Kachimushi! Kachimushi are one of Gonta's favorite Post-War bugs. Gonta think they are descendants of Pre-War Anotogaster sieboldii dragonfly species. These bugs can grow to the size of birds. Also, unlike usual dragonflies, Kachimushi have six wings, not four. They still have compound eyes like their Pre-War ancestors. This means they can see things human eyes can't, like ultraviolet light."
Makoto was impressed by Gonta's knowledge of insects. "Huh, I didn't know that." Then, he remembered the bird size part the entomologist mentioned, and his eyes widened in shock. "Wait, those things can get how big?"
"About as big as bird. Gonta not sure if we can tame bugs or not, but Gonta thinks it would be great to keep one as pet," he said in a cheerful tone. If only I could feel so comfortable around bugs , Makoto wondered. "But Gonta would prefer to keep Butterfly Kachimushi as pet instead."
"A pet... I don't know about that..." Dealing with normal insects is more than enough, but ones of that size? No thank you. Plus, I don't really think we should be keeping Post-War animals as pets until we can be sure they're not a threat , Makoto thought. He flipped through the book once more before landing on a page titled "Wogyu". It showed a picture of a two-headed cow, its skin seemingly burned, retaining a blackish color. Oh, it must be a pun of Wagyu, like the cow. I get it. [Like how Brahmin are named after the Brahman cow.]
