Seungmin was the first to make a noise, letting out a pained groan. He was clutching his ankle, his face grimacing from pain. Jeongin dropped the gun and immediately went up to help him, grabbing him from under his shoulder and lifting him up. Later, Jeongin grabbed the gun for safe measure, pocketing it.
He stood up as well, looking around to see where they were. "Fuck, we ran far. The house is almost a mile away."
"I can't run anyway, when I tripped over your fat ass, I sprained my ankle." Seungmin grumbles, leaning onto Jeongin. Minho sends him a glare but doesn't say anything.
"Well we should get going now. I don't want to be out here any longer." Minho sighed, walking up to Seungmin and grabbing him under his other arm.
They half walk-half drag Seungmin back to their home. Is it even home anymore? It doesn't feel like it. The city is eerily quiet, usually swarmed with zombies. They did their best to avoid any kind of interactions with the undead. It was surprisingly easy.
On their way, they crossed the train tracks where they got cornered before. Jeongin can't remember the last time he heard the sound of the train horn. He can't recall how crowded the stations used to be. His heart clenched as he continued to think, belittled by old memories. Reminders of how it will never be the same anymore.
"Guys, you feel that?" Minho whispered, snapping Jeongin out of his thoughts. Jeongin stopped, trying to figure out what his hyung was talking about. That's when he felt it. The pebbles moving under him.
"Fuck! A train's coming!" Seungmin yells, voicing all their thoughts. And sure enough, in the distance was a train bolting full speed down the tracks. It was ablaze, almost like a fire bullet coming at them.
Jeongin felt the urge to let go of Seungmin and run. Run for his life. Though, hearing the panicked whimper from his hyung snapped him out of his selfish thoughts. He gave up on trying to be gentle with Seungmin and started dragging him across the tracks, Minho on Seungmin's other side. It wouldn't just be fine if they got off the tracks, the fire seemed to spread around the train, outlining it. They'd have to get far enough to avoid getting burned.
The ground shook more and Jeongin's ears were about to burst from the horrible sound of the train squeaking against the track added with the roar of everything happening. With one final lunge forward, Minho and Jeongin were able to pull Seungmin away from the burning train. They collapsed to the ground, eating a shit ton of rocks and pebbles. Thankfully, it sped past them, leaving them untouched by the flames.
Jeongin let out a sigh of relief, looking over at Seungmin. The puppy-like boy looked terrified. There were tears rolling down his face and his breathing was shallow. Jeongin felt bad. He knew he probably didn't look much better himself. Honestly, the adrenaline was the only thing keeping him from breaking down.
"Fuck, I'm so sorry." Minho whispers next to them. Jeongin turns to see him kneeled on the ground, tears swarming his usually sparkly and teasing eyes. He looked so down, so disappointed. "I should have shot him. I don't know why I froze up, it's just-"
His apology was cut short to the sound of metal against metal crashing. Jeongin whipped his head to the source of the noise, slapping his hands over his ears. There was a huge sound of an explosion and more metal scraping. The ground shook from the impact. Not far away from them, the speeding train had hit another train that was already on the tracks.
Now it was flying towards them.
Jeongin's survival instinct kicked in and he bolted the opposite way. Something zoomed past him and he realized it was Minho who seemed to have also snapped into the right mindset. As Jeongin was running, he remembered something or more like he remembered someone.
Jeongin whipped around to see Seungmin, hobbling his way towards him. Panic and pain were evident on his face as he tried to run. Jeongin's expression dropped as he made eye contact with him. Everything was happening too fast. He could see the train and he could see Seungmin. The two were too close.
"Hyung!" Jeongin screamed, stumbling forward to Seungmin. Then just like that, everything was over. The train had crashed down to the ground. Right where Seungmin was standing. Jeongin stared at the train, too shocked to comprehend what happened at the moment. It only hit him when a pool of blood started trickling from under the train.
"Jeongin, are you alright- where's Seungmin?" Minho interrupts himself immediately, his face paling when he realizes one of the younger ones isn't here. He follows Jeongin's gaze to the ground and it hits him. Seungmin's dead.
"We left him behind. It's our fault." Jeongin whispered, stumbling back from the spot. He trips over his foot and falls to the ground. His body trembles, unable to get up. Minho is just standing there, staring where Seungmin was before.
Slowly, Minho turned around and glared at Jeongin. The look on his face was murderous and his eyes shone brighter than ever in the most unnatural way possible. Minho pulled something out of his pocket. A gun. Jeongin looked at it with confusion. Didn't he have Minho's gun? Did he really carry two? Why was his hyung looking at him like that?
"Hyung.. What's- what's wrong?" Jeongin stutters out quietly, as if speaking too loudly would trigger Minho. He started to crawl away, dragging himself and Minho began to step closer.
"It was you all along, Jeongin?" Minho asked, hurt evident in his voice. He cocks his gun and Jeongin's eyes widen with fear. "You bit Jisung, didn't you? You killed Hyunjin! It was you! I know it was!"Minho's voice had gone from a whisper to a roar in a matter of seconds. He was closing in on Jeongin, his gun shaking in his hand. There was a look of pure insanity and anger on his face. Jeongin was so taken aback, so scared of his hyung. The usually calm one who took care of every situation with ease looked so unhinged.
"Minho-hyung, what are you talking abou-"
"Don't fucking interrupt me!" Minho screamed at him, pointing the gun at Jeongin's head. He looked crazy. His eyes wilder than normal. "You fucking did this to Jisung! Don't lie to me! Now you're gonna kill me too! I know it!"Hyung please!" Jeongin begged, tears rolling down his face. He reached into his pocket, watching as his hyung began to lose his mind right in front of him.
"Don't Jeongin. I still care about you, you know?" Minho stated softly, his expression not matching his voice. It was of pure anger and disgust. He raised the gun to Jeongin's head, pointing a direct shot through his forehead. "Since I care so much, I'll make it quick. Jisung deserves his revenge. Goodbye Jeongi-"
A gunshot rang through the air and a body fell to the ground. It wasn't Minho's gun that went off but it was his body that fell. Jeongin's hand shook as he held his gun, the one that Minho had dropped earlier. Tears streamed down his face as he watched the color drain out of his hyung's face.
He threw the gun on the ground, hating how it felt in his hands. He had killed two of his friends today with it. Jisung, who was already infected and Minho, who wasn't. He hurried over to Minho, regretting his decision immediately. It was for the best he tried to tell himself. Minho was gonna pull the trigger, it was obvious. He wondered what had made his hyung so angry, so certain it was him.
That's when he realized.
As he clung to Minho's dead body, he looked down at his hands. They were turning a weird shade of gray and on his right hand was a bite mark. He must have gotten it from Jisung when they were running from him. The adrenaline and fear must have stopped the infection from taking over earlier.
Now that there were no more challenges, no more obstacles to distract him, he felt his mind going fuzzy. Who was this person that he was holding? They looked delicious. Why were their tears still rolling down his face? What was he crying about? Why did his heart clench whenever he looked over at the fallen train? He stared down at his hands with a frown, blinking his eyes over and over again since he felt them itch.
Then, all the memories seemed to fade from Jeongin's eyes as they went white.
