CHAPTER XIV

Days passed in a blur, and the weekend arrived once again. I hadn't heard from Mr. Rafel, which was a relief since I didn't have the courage to face him. Everything about him is so intimidating. He always wears a black mask that covers half of his face, but in the cabaret, it's completely covered.

Apparently, the outer world has no idea about his ownership of an entire branch of similar establishments. It's understandable; revealing such a detail might tarnish the carefully maintained persona he presents to the world.

He prefers the full mask because many important officials frequent this place. It's ironic how they appear so happy with their families on camera, yet in reality, they're just two-faced hypocrites. Every night, while they indulge here, their little kids and wives wait at home, believing their father or husband is out working hard. Poor souls, oblivious to the truth.

I tried looking for his pictures online, but his Instagram account is strictly for business purposes. There are no personal photos of him. I searched on Google and only found images from his younger years. He was handsome even then.

Grey eyes, porcelain skin, and sharp features that would put Greek gods to shame. I wonder what he looks like behind that elegant black mask he always wears.

Was I getting dreamy about a man? Yes. Is it unnatural for me? Hell yes. I've loathed men ever since my childhood, but then a man named Matteo came along and changed everything.

I smiled at the memory from ten years ago when I was on my period and Matteo was freaking out over my sudden outburst of emotions.

FLASHBACK
TEN YEARS AGO :

Valeria stomped back and forth in the middle of the living room while Matteo sat on the couch, looking almost petrified. She was on her period, and he couldn't get his hands on her favorite chocolate.

"Val, my dear-"

"NO. You said you would bring them when you came back! I waited all day, and you forgot!"

"I'm sorry, my sweetbun. Would you like to buy some ice cream instead?"

Her face lit up a little. She let her arms fall to her sides, and Matteo smiled, signaling her to come over to him. She slowly walked into his open arms.

"Daddy?"

"Yes, little one?"

"Do you think he misses me?"

Her question made him a little upset. But it wasn't her fault. She missed him-her biological father-who had abandoned her on the streets of Verona. His thoughts spiraled down the path of what might have happened if he hadn't found her.

"No, he does not."

"He hates me, right?"

"Maybe. But I don't. I love you, my child. Don't think about him, hmm? How about we go buy some chocolate ice cream?"

Her face lit up, and she looked at him with a smile so huge it made her eyes form crescents. He gently kissed her forehead and picked her up in his arms, heading out toward his car.

Never in his wildest dreams had he thought he would be playing with Barbies, painting his nails pink, braiding hair, and taking a child to the ice cream shop.

FKASBACK ENDS.
CURRENT TIME

A huge smile spread across my face as I recalled some of the other memories. It was Saturday, just after 4, when my phone dinged with a notification.

UNKNOWN: Hi there, this is Bianca.

ME: Oh, hey there.

BIANCA: Umm...are you free tonight? Wanna get drinks?
