When the whole world seems to unravel hidden creatures begin to emerge from the shadows, destroying everything in their path.

Werewolves have taken over and desegregated everything and everyone. Who stood in their path of hierarchy. They had two main goals: to take over humanity and find their "soulmate."

Whatever that means, I tell myself they are foul and dangerous; they didn't deserve soulmates.

I always thought.

I believe I might be one of the last free humans left after we humans were eliminated and bodies buried to ash if we didn't have a soulmate whose body, mind, and soul belonged to the wolves. They used these metal machines; that pricked the skin behind the ear, drawing blood. Analyzing the blood would help them detect if the human had a wolf as their mate without the wolf physically being there. They would come to towns, neighborhoods, or anywhere you could hide. Test your blood and kill you on the spot if you don't have a mate. They weren't merciful; they were cruel and destructive. Stopping at nothing as you couldn't hide your sent would give your location away for miles. My whole family was murdered. Everyone I ever knew was gone. I was alone, with nobody. How I managed to survive without anyone for as long as I have is shocking. I have always had ease shooting my bow and always carried daggers and knives for self-defense, but thankfully never had to use them. I was civil; after all, they didn't even know I was there. Plus, I would never try and physically fight them; I was no match. The only one who could find me if I managed to stay hidden would be the supposed soulmate they dagger on and on about. It disrupted me how they would just take women, men, and children to their world unwillingly and hold them as prisoners. If the simple screen said match and shot out their mate's names, they would be safe from execution. Now, thankfully, I have managed to allude to these grotesque creatures. I have never been tested. I did see it done when my town was busted by them; they came in with numbers, and with such force, that we didn't stand a chance.

I, being a hunter, was out in the woods when this first started. I was walking briskly home when I stopped in my tracks, and my hair rose on end as I heard blood-curling screams. I pulled out my binoculars, looking through the lens. I saw them; they were here, and I stopped breathing.

They were killing my whole town and my family while I drew behind some bushes like a coward. I didn't try to help. I'm ashamed. I should be dead with my family, but my feet didn't move from their spot as I hid cowardly as wolves strolled past me, my eyes tight as I expected them to strike and drag me out and end me as they did with our kind, as their sense of smell was unfathomable.

However, as a blessing from the gods above, maybe I wasn't sure. All I know is that if I didn't move and they didn't see me, I might make it out alive. I tried to tell myself this was for the best. We did know they were coming and tried to prepare, but it was fruitful. They destroyed every city in the world; not even water would stop them.

In my go bag, I had the day this all happened was my camping bag, which already had the things I would need to be on my own for an unforeseen amount of time. My bag had a pot, machete, crank radio, earbuds, basic hygiene equipment, flint (though I have mastered the art of friction fire), binoculars, a rain count, and some other spare clothes, a cup in which I stored my boiled water, and a first aid kit quickly demising as the rough wilderness unforgiving.

Most things I'd scavenge for. After 8 long years of the werewolf awakening, they said over the radio that all humans unmatched had been eradicated, and now a strong bloodline would only exist. As a wolf pair, despite one being human, they will only produce other wolves, and wolves can only produce offspring with their intended if you will.

I can hear this like it was yesterday, but in truth, it was 4 years ago. Four years ago, and now no other human has survived unmatched according to their records. Zig, the sound of my crack raid lol fills the air as I grind the gears, moving my hand in a circle and holding onto the handle tightly. The update I was anxiously waiting on from a man with a deep, patronizing voice sparks in my eardrums through my headphones.

Always wear them, as potential threats could easily be strolling past me, and I wouldn't even know. "Well, we did it, ladies and gentlemen; we eradicated a whole species with a chuckle—well, all the insignificant ones, that is." With howls chirping in all different directions and distances, this was four years ago; now it has been eight years, and I've managed to outsmart them and allude to them all this time, never leaving any evidence of my existence.

I was under their nose the whole time. While I have suffered the unimaginable loss of everyone I knew and loved, I know my family would be happy just knowing that I was safe from the wolf terror.

I was safe for 8 years alone. Until one day a wolf finds me.
