-Y/N POV-I lay awake in the bed, not really able to fall asleep. I had gotten a message from Nokk, saying they had a hostage rescue mission over in the Middle East, details on a need-to-know basis. This had me worried. It was there where Kevin and I had lost our Ghost team, our family. To those damn White Masks.
Minute after minute went by as I grew worried. I was mainly worried about Nokk. I had come to my own senses earlier and had decided that I kinda liked her a bit, even if I hadn't seen her face. Even if she wouldn't think twice about me, I still worried about her safety over there. I got the feeling that this happens a lot here to operators who are close with others, like in a relationship, or the situation with Ela and her sister. From what I gather, they don't really like each other, but I can still see them looking out for one another.
That thought brought me to a realization: Alex was on this mission as well. How was Lera coping with it all? I assume this was normal for them when the other is on a mission, but still...it would be nice to know, should things with me and Nokk move forward.
I decided to swing by and pay her a visit, but before I did, I sent a quick message, just to make sure she was up, as it was around 2 in the morning.
Specter: Hey are ya up?
I waited for a few minutes before I heard my phone buzz.
Lera: Yeah I'm up alright. What's up kid?
Specter: You mind if I swing by? Kinda need to breathe
Lera: Worried about Nokk huh? Lol
Specter: Rub it in lol
Lera: I'm actually in the cafeteria right now
Lera: Like you...kinda worried about Alex
Specter: They still serving this late?
Lera: Nope. Being said, bring a snack?
Specter: Doritos or Chips Ahoy?
Lera: Duh-ritos
Specter: Very funny, I'll be there in a few
Lera: Alright
I put my phone down as I went into the kitchenette, grabbing the large bag of Cool Ranch Doritos that me and Nokk got last week. Strapping my drop-leg on and holstering my sidearm, I stepped out, locked the door, and headed down to the cafeteria. On the way down I thought more about my situation with Nokk. Yeah I haven't seen her, but a part of that mystery is what attracts me, what draws me in. It makes me feel something. I'm not sure how to describe it, but it's just one of those good feelings, like reuniting with a friend you haven't seen in ages.
Upon stepping into the cafeteria, I noticed a single lamp on in the corner, the rest of the place pretty dark. I made out Lera sitting at the booth behind it, her hands folded, seeming deep in thought. I came over, dropping the chips onto the table, and sitting down across from her.
"Ever been here at night?" she asked after a few seconds. I shrugged.
"Haven't been much of anywhere at nice, minus me and Nokks room"
"Sometimes it feels nice to just step out and breathe," she said, opening the chip bag and taking one. "Helps to clear the head. Especially at a time like this"
"I know they'll be alright, I just can't help worrying," I admitted, leaning back into the seat. Lera eyed me for a second.
"You like her," she stated, crunching on a chip. I blinked.
"I what?" I asked. She chuckled a bit.
"Nokk. You like her, I can tell. Alex even speculated." I clicked my tongue, thinking of a response.
"I uh-" Lera held up her hand.
"It's alright kid, I ain't the secret spilling type. Just means we're in this worrying game together" she sighed, rapping her fingers on the table. "Just wish we could get an update"
"Can I ask you something?" I found myself saying. Lera looked up.
"Shoot"
"How do you and Alex cope when the other is away on a mission?" I like getting straight to the point when I ask a question. I want the best answers possible and this way seems to work the best. Lera seemed to ponder the question a bit, nibbling at a chip.
"I guess just knowing that the other is an elite operator" she spoke. "We know what everyone here is capable of, and what they can get done on the field. It comes down to having faith"
"Hard to have that" I admitted, looking down. The memories of the incident flooded my head, bringing back the bad thoughts. I really missed my old team, and I'd do anything to see them again. Now with Nokk gone, and even Alex too...I couldn't bear to lose anymore.
"Y/N..." Lera trailed off, seeming in thought. After a bit, she sighed. "I really don't know how to put this, but..."
"It's alright" I interrupted, holding up my hand. "It's in the past now, i've kinda...had to deal with it, ya know? The thing is...I don't want to lose anyone else close to me. You, Nokk, Alex...Kevin...I don't know what I'd do." I slumped over a bit, feeling some tears well. I wiped them away, looking back up.
"Rainbow is a big family, Y/N. We all care for each other, and have each other's backs." Lera spoke up. I nodded. I was about to speak more when I felt my phone vibrate in my pocket. I slipped it out and looked at the contact that came up. It was Nokk. I look up and Lera and also see her looking at her phone. "Call from Alex, gimme a sec Y/N"
"No worries, I'm getting one from Nokk" I chuckle, answering. "Hey, what's up?"
"Y/N! We're about 10 minutes out from base, get Lera and Kevin and meet us at the helipad!" Nokk spoke. She spoke rather quickly so it was hard to make much out.
"Nokk? What's going on??" I asked. I heard "We're on it!" from Lera, and assumed that Alex had told her the same thing.
"Just grab them and meet us there! Oh and bring Gustave too!"
