Mr. Keating had insisted on refereeing a football game in class. The gym teacher had been hesitant, but Keating had managed to be persuasive. He was so convincing that he even got Margaret to play. She found herself very troubled by the situation, as she couldn't really boast of being a good player.
Yet, there she was on a football field with her friends. She was very surprised to score at least once during the match, which earned her a hug from Neil. She was covered in mud and sweating profusely. At one time, she would have hated for anyone to see her like that, but that day, she didn't care at all. It was liberating to let go of her insecurities and simply enjoy the moment.
The game lasted a long time, and as the sun began to set for the night, Mr. Keating's team won, and everyone celebrated the victory. Before he could comprehend it, Keating was lifted into the air by several of his students, who carried him across the field, running. Margaret admired this from beside her brother and smiled in a way she never had before. The gym teacher watched the scene from a distance, unable to hide his surprise at how the students respected and adored Keating. This respect was not born from fear or obligation but from genuine admiration and love.
After the match, Margaret took a shower and waited for the boys so they could organize one of their meetings. This time, they had brought old pipes to replace their cigarettes. This made them cough, and the sensation wasn't the same, but it amused them greatly. Margaret had more difficulty smoking than the others, and Charlie took the pipe from her, claiming it was bad for her.
"I think he's right," Pitts agreed.
"Why? Because it's bad for my health, or because you can't stand a girl smoking like a man?" Margaret retorted.
"You call that smoking? I call that choking," teased Charlie.
"Give her back her pipe, Charlie. She'll do what she wants with it," said Todd.
Charlie returned the pipe to her, and she continued to smoke, but seeing that her coughing attracted worried looks, she stopped. At that moment, her brother arrived with a lamp he named "The God of the Cave." Everyone accepted the idea, and Margaret noticed that Knox seemed sadder than usual, guessing it was probably a heartbreak.
Suddenly, Charlie blew into a saxophone he had brought and asked to start the meeting. His friends laughed and complained about their ears while he stood up and continued to make annoying noises with his instrument.
"Very witty, Charlie," joked Margaret.
"Are you trying to kill our ears?" complained Cameron.
"That would be quite a feat," added Neil.
And suddenly, a softer sound rose from the saxophone, and a pleasant melody gently filled the cave. The whole group looked at Charlie perplexed. Margaret stared at him in surprise; she didn't know he could play the saxophone. She thought she knew everything about him, but it turned out she was wrong. Charlie continued to play while approaching Margaret, maintaining eye contact. No one could ignore the rising tension between the two of them along with the sound of the instrument. He finished his little melody, and everyone applauded.
"Where did you learn to play?" Neil asked.
"My parents forced me to study the clarinet for five years!"
"I love the clarinet!" said Cameron.
"Well, I hate it!" replied Charlie, "but the sax is more...sonorous."
"What a poet!" teased Margaret.
"I know, I know," Charlie boasted humorously.
Suddenly, Knox stood up and said, "Without Chris, I'd rather kill myself!" His friends tried to calm him down, but he refused and declared he was going to call her. He rushed outside, followed by everyone. To celebrate the occasion, Charlie played a sax tune, and Margaret took it from his hands, laughing and telling him to hurry.
They ran to the school to reach the reception phone. Once at the doors, Charlie stopped Margaret and said:
"I bet a kiss he gets rejected."
"Bet accepted!"
They entered, surrounding Knox, who struggled to call his beloved. He managed to dial the number and got Chris on the line but immediately hung up. He feared Chris's reaction and the Danburys', sharing his concerns with his friends. As he spoke, he looked at each of his comrades and finally declared, "Carpe Diem." He redialed the number, and Margaret and Charlie approached him to listen to the conversation. Knox introduced himself and whispered:
"She's happy I called!"
Chris kept talking and hinted that she wanted to invite him to a party.
"Yes! Say yes!" Margaret and Charlie whispered.
Knox accepted the invitation and gently hung up the phone before shouting with joy, encouraged by everyone.
"She wanted to call me! To invite me to her party!"
"At Chet Danbury's place," Charlie specified.
"So what?"
"It doesn't mean you'll be her date..."
Knox ignored Charlie's comment and headed for the stairs, shouting, "Chris, she's made for me," and everyone cheered him on, saying, "Carpe Diem." Then everyone went to their respective dorms except Charlie, who accompanied Margaret to her floor.
The two wanted to stop at the door of her room, but they heard a teacher coming up the stairs towards them. Margaret panicked, opened her room door, and hid Charlie inside. He blushed slightly and laughed to ease the tension.
"Well, it seems you owe me a kiss," Charlie said.
"Absolutely not, Knox didn't get rejected," the young girl defended.
"More or less..."
"He got invited to a party!"
"At the boyfriend of the girl he loves."
Margaret sighed. Charlie approached her, forcing her to press against her door to maintain some distance that the young boy kept closing. Margaret took Charlie's beret and covered his head with it to annoy him. He laughed and completely removed it, leaving his hair messy. The young girl couldn't believe what she was about to do. She slipped her hands around Charlie's neck, brought him closer so their lips could finally meet, and gave him a short and sweet kiss.
"You really call that a kiss?" Charlie was astonished.
"What did you expect?"
"More than that!"
"Well, that's all you're getting."
"I doubt that," he said, laughing before kissing her again.
As soon as he felt Margaret's lips against his, he wrapped his hands around her waist and gently pushed her against the door, prolonging the kiss to savor it better. Neither of them would ever want to admit it, but this moment was extremely enjoyable, and they didn't want it to end. Margaret ran her hands through Charlie's hair and slowly slid down the door as she felt his grip on her loosen, signaling the end of their kiss.
When the kiss ended, they looked into each other's eyes, and they knew at that precise moment that they loved each other without knowing if it was mutual. They had such a talent for hiding their emotions that doubt lingered in their minds despite the sweetness of the kiss.
Charlie took a deep breath and wondered if he should say something, but instead, he put his beret back on and said he had to leave. Margaret nodded and opened the door for Charlie to leave. As soon as he was out of sight, the young girl wanted to close the door but noticed Mr. Keating in the hallway, who had seen Charlie leave the room. She blushed furiously and didn't dare say anything. So, she closed the door and decided to push everything that had just happened out of her mind.
Later that night, lying in bed, Margaret couldn't help but replay the day's events in her mind. The football game, the impromptu saxophone performance, Knox's dramatic declaration, and, most significantly, the kisses she shared with Charlie. She smiled to herself, feeling a mix of excitement and anxiety about what the future might hold. Despite her attempts to push it out of her mind, she knew that this day had changed something in her, something that couldn't easily be ignored. She drifted off to sleep with a sense of anticipation, ready to embrace whatever came next with the same courage and passion she had discovered within herself.
