"Wanna be yours, inside your dreams tonight."
Raven's POV
It was now the following day, and I was wrapping up my genetics lab, scheduled from 5:30-7:30 PM this semester. Each week, trudging to the lab after a long day of classes felt like a death march. The fluorescent lights and the cold, sterile environment only added to my exhaustion. The assignments were intricate and demanding, and though I had a keen interest in genetics, the late timing always made it hard to stay motivated.
Tonight was no different. I double-checked my completed worksheet, ensuring every detail was meticulously filled out, before placing it in the turn-in tray. With a deep sigh, I slung my backpack over my shoulder and left the lab. The air outside was crisp, carrying the faint promise of the impending summer. I quickened my pace, eager to reach the stadium.
Caitlin had a basketball practice there, and I promised her I'd come by, even if it was after my late lecture. I knew she was struggling with her sprained wrist, which had been bothering her for weeks now. Despite the injury, she insisted on practicing every day, not wanting to fall behind. Her determination always amazed me.
As I approached the stadium, the familiar sounds of basketballs bouncing and sneakers squeaking against the hardwood floor greeted me. I walked in, scanning the court until I spotted her. Caitlin was at the three-point line, one hand shooting from the logo because her other wrist was still wrapped in a brace. She was so focused she didn't notice me come in. Smiling to myself, I walked quietly up behind her and hugged her from behind.
"Hi," I whispered in her ear.
She immediately dropped the ball, turning around with a smile to return my hug. "Hi," she said softly, leaning in to give me a quick kiss.
"What are you working on?" I asked, noting the frustration etched on her face.
"It's killing me not being able to shoot because of my wrist," she sighed. "But I was trying to at least shoot one-handed because it's better than nothing."
I nodded, understanding her frustration. "You're amazing, you know that? Most people would just take a break."
She smiled, a little sadly. "I can't afford to take a break. Not with the season starting."
I admired her dedication, but I also worried about her pushing herself too hard. "Just don't overdo it, okay? You need to heal properly."
She nodded, though I could see the stubborn determination in her eyes. "I know. It's just hard. Basketball is everything to me."
We stood there for a moment, just holding each other. The gym around us seemed to fade into the background, leaving just the two of us in our little bubble. I wished I could take away her pain and frustration, but all I could do was be there for her.
"Come on," Caitlin said, motioning for me to follow her.
I tilted my head, puzzled, as she led me over to the free-throw line. Her eyes sparkled with a mischievous glint that made me both excited and wary.
She lightly handed me a basketball, and I looked at her in confusion. "What are you doing?"
"I'm going to teach you basketball. I can't play right now, but that doesn't mean I can't coach," she said, smirking.
I sighed, feeling a bit self-conscious. "I suck at basketball."
"Not with me as your coach. Now, hold the ball like this," she instructed, placing the ball in my hands. Her hands lightly touched mine, and I could feel her breath fanning my neck, sending a shiver down my spine.
