Shots fired.

There was a screech, then a scream, then "Its left eye is out!" Glancing behind me, I saw Logan now running towards us, but Taylor ran towards him, grabbing the shotgun out of his hands and immediately assuming a firing position, despite Ash's verbal protest.

"Taylor what are you doing?!"
"Keep shooting. We need to injure it as much as we can."

This seemed to light something up in Logan, and I watched him pull a second handgun and start firing off more shots as well. I'd stopped running at this point, but my chest heaved as I fought to catch my breath, and my heart felt like it was beating out of my chest. Aiden gave me a concerned glance, but I was far more focused on the phantom.

"..If the brain is located behind the eyes, then we might be able to at least paralyze it if we aim there."

Bullets broke the creatures flesh, casings fell to the ground, and all we could do was stand there and watch. When I finally came to, I rushed to Ash's side, helping her fumbling hands to grab her headphones. Her hands were shaking, so I quickly grabbed them and moved them out of my way so I could reach inside the bag. She seemed to relax a little once she'd got them on, her eyes glancing down at our still connected hands before awkwardly letting go.

I was brought back to the moment when I heard Aiden speak up, "..yeah, uh- Tay, it stopped moving. Good job." He weakly gave a half-hearted thumbs-up, which made me smile a little, despite the circumstance. Glancing back at Ash, she'd noticed my smile at Aiden, but quickly masked any emotion behind her gaze, instead crossing her arms across her chest and glancing at Logan, who was speaking.

"We need to hurry in case it recovers." Taylor was still shaking, anger radiating off of her, but she reluctantly agreed, and we continued on our way down the hall, albeit it much more aware of our surroundings this time.

<><><><><>

Taylor couldn't find the keys. Ben was working on tightening Tyler's bandages and Aiden was watching the hall, keeping any phantoms from just walking in and killing us all, while the rest of us searched. Nothing. Absolutely nothing.

"Where are they?! Coach must have moved them again!"
"..Does he move them often?"
"Yeah, because idiots like Jay and Conner keep messing with them!"
"...I feel a minor sense of Deja Vu.."
Logan checked the time, mumbling just loud enough for us to hear, disheartened, "we have 3 minutes left.."

I stood up from my search, glancing around the room and finding no obvious hiding spots. Of course we couldn't just get the keys, of course things had to be difficult.

"Aiden, there's a straggler."
"Yeah, I can hear it running... ✨Got it!✨"
"..Gross," I commented as phantom sludge dripped off the blade of his knife.

"Are there any more?"
Aiden peeked his head around the corner, before mumbling, "..I can't see any?"

He was cut off by a rumble as everything shook and things started falling to the ground. There was a loud crack, and I looked up to see a crack forming in the ceiling. If I had to guess, the giant thing was very alive and very upset.

I backed up into a wall as Ash yelled for everyone to get under something, yet she was too late. Right above the doorway where Aiden stood, the ceiling collapsed. I watched it almost in slow motion as he made quick eye contact with me, a million words said with just a glance.

As soon as I saw him hit the ground, I was running towards him, even as rocks continued to fall. The bruises would be worth it, nothing else mattered right now. Ashlyn was right at my side as I collapsed next to his unmoving body, blood dripping into his blonde curls. I quickly pulled his head into my lap, breathing quickening as I fought not to hyperventilate.

I cupped his face with my hand as I brushed his hair out of his eyes, trying not to cry as my shaking hand left a handprint on his cheek. I barely noticed Ash silently panicking next to me as Taylor was saying something about getting him on a table, but that didn't matter to me right now. Only one, and one thing only, mattered.

There was no sign of life coming from the boy laying in my lap.
