A large range of reactions spread throughout the room.
Marella was so shocked her hands burst into flame, and she had to wring her hands to put it out. Tam's eyes widened and his eyebrows shot up. Biana dropped her hair pin again, and Linh clutched her brother's arm. Dex looked up from the wires he was connecting with a surprised expression.
Fitz exclaimed, "Wait, really?!" And the three councillors all stared at Forkle with an expression that said, Oh, really?Sophie's mind filled with questions and she looked over at Keefe, who looked skeptical. She turned to Mr. Forkle, who looked extremely tired.
"What school? And do you know who?" Sophie asked, hoping Forkle would answer instead of being himself. To her surprise, he did.
Or, he tried to.
"Although we don't know who it is the Neverseen experimented, they go to Monomoy Regional High School."
Sophie thought for a moment. "Isn't that in Massachusetts?"
"That is correct, Miss Foster."
Dex's eyes widened. "My mom told me about that place, she always wanted to go there. It's really pretty apparently."
Sophie nodded. "Yeah it is, I went there for winter break to visit my 'grandparents' once."
"So that's where this experimented human is? How do we know who it is though?" Fitz asked, seeming a little overwhelmed.
"Well, there are about 640 students there now, so since you're all going to be in the same grade- despite all of your age differences- it's narrowed down to roughly 128 students. And we are fairly sure the human is a girl. That brings it down to around 55 students." Mr. Forkle explained with a sigh.
He probably knew that didn't help a lot.
"As for how you will know who she is, that is up to you. Does being around her mute your abilities, or enhance them even? You'll have to rely on your own feelings and each other."
Keefe smirked, the familiar humorous glint returning to his eyes. "Mr. Forkle, have you been reading poetry? Writing it, maybe?"
Mr. Forkle nodded thoughtfully. "Yes, actually. It has been quite soothing to the mind."
Keefe blinked. "Well, that took an unexpected turn."
Sophie snorted, flicking Keefe's elbow. He gave her a pointed look while rubbing his arm, though a smirk was still pulling at his lips.
Sophie gave an apologetic look at Mr. Forkle, pretending not to notice Keefe's pouty face in her peripheral. "So... when do we go? I mean, human schools start soon."
"Actually, that's what I was just talking to Elwin about." Forkle gestured to Elwin for him to continue.
"I've decided," Elwin started with a smile. "That I'll let you go early. Though, I don't really have a choice. But I think you'll be okay, you're tough."
Sophie returned the smile. "Thanks Elwin. So, how early?"
"Well, Maruca and Wylie are already there, and Edaline conjured all of your stuff except for the elvin clothes, so why wait? We're leaving in an hour, think you'll be ready by then?" Forkle asked.
Despite the circumstances, Sophie couldn't help feeling a little giddy at the prospect. "Yeah, for sure."
"I'll be back in an hour, Miss Foster." Forkle was about to glitter away when Councillor Emery spoke up.
"Wait a moment, Mr... Forkle." Small traces of disgust lined his rich voice. "Are we supposed to just agree with this?"
"Well, yes. Otherwise you'd face the possibility of this wonderful group of very powerful teenagers getting harmed. Now, I must be going. I have to tell the gnomes to finish up the rooms. I'll meet everyone back here in an hour." And with that, Mr. Forkle stepped through the light and got whisked away.
