18: Break Free

We were all sitting there. Staring at the phone. Waiting for some one to have enough courage to answer

"Ross.... answer it" Riker doesn't understand me. If I pick up that phone and Laura talks, being held against her wll by James I don't know what I would do. "Ross?"

"I heard you" I picked up the phone and stared at the screen. Eventually I answered, pressing the speaker button

"Ross?" it was Laura. You could hear her wimpering on the other side of the call

"Baby I'm here. Where are you"

"I dont know. Come get me.... Please"

"Baby it'll be ok. I promise" all of a sudden I heard a deep, raspy voice

"Hello, Ross"

"Who the hell is this?"

"Oh, come on. I thought you were smarter than that"

"Don't fucking play games with me James"

"Oh you won't get your wife back with that attitude"

"I will kill you!" My grip tightened on the phone

"Oh I guess you don't want her back. Bye then"

"Wait wait wait!" I screamed. Hoping he wouldn't hang up on me

"That's what I thought. To get Laura back, simply retrace your steps" And with that he hung up. I stared at the screen for a while

"What does that mean?" Riker said as he and Vanessa stepped closer towards me

"Retrace my steps...." It was silent while everyone thought

"Guys, its so obvious! Go back to that house we were just at!" Vanessa said, talking about James' house

"Oh thats brilliant! I'll be back" I ran upstairs to Araura's bedroom, opening the door. "Araura, I need you to do what I told you again. When you hear someone coming, hide. Take Noah with you" She nodded

"Daddy, whats going on?"

"Nothing sweetie, I promise everything will be fine"

"Daddy, if something happens to you.... What do I do?"

"Nothing will happen"

"But if it does?!" her voice became slightly louder. Tears formed in her eyes. I walked over to her, picking her up

"Araura, you would live with aunty Ness and uncle Rik, but nothing will happen. Me and mommy will be back, ok?" She nodded. i wiped her tears and put her back down. "Noah take care of her. Be safe, too. I dont want anything to happen to you guys" he nodded. I left the room, closing the door behind me, and walking back downstairs

"Lets go, Ross. James called back saying we need to be there in the next 15 minutes, or else" Riker said with the phone in his hands. I ran towards the door, opening it, and going to the car. Riker and Vanessa quickly followed me, getting in and driving off

"Ross, call Rocky and Ellington. Leave Rydel and Ryland out of this, they dont need to get hurt" I followed Rikers instructions. When we made it to the house it was still the same. No cars. No lights. Just silence

"Ross, they aren't here" I couldnt believe it. With out a word I stepped out of the car and walked to the house. I opened the front door to see everything back to where it was. Some one fixed the bookshelves and replaced the tv. The curtains were back up and the picture frames were back in place

"What the..." Riker said as he snuck uo behind me, with Vanessa

"Didn't i trash this place?"

"Yes you did. I wouldnt do that again if I were you" We heard a voice. The sound traveled all through the house. Theres no way we could tell where it was coming from
