Jai is a light sleeper. One small sound and he's awake. This time, there's an exception. Not once had he woken up throughout the night, a rare thing. He shifts under the warm covers, his bones feeling slightly stiff despite feeling well rested. Now he knows why Shekar is such a heavy sleeper, he has a really nice mattress. He feels around the big bed, noticing that the space next to him is cold and empty. He sits up and looks around the sunlit room. It's just him. A few ideas of why he's alone in the bed take seed in his mind. Just like last night, his insecurities are beginning to rear their ugly heads. He feels defeated. He also feels like he shouldn't have said anything last night. In regards to these emotions he feels, Jai doesn't want to face him.
Dragging his hand down his face he lets out a sigh of frustration. Sadly, he knows that he can't stay in this room. He has to leave, but that doesn't mean that he can't take his time. Stall is the better term. It takes him minutes to even leave the bed, and there's thirty seconds between each step he takes.
Finally he reaches the door and his hand latches onto the cold knob. With bated breath, he slowly twists and pulls the door open. For a moment, he surveys the empty hallway. Despite that, he refuses to take that chance, and so his first step out of the room is cautious. With hesitancy he treads, the journey down the hallway is much longer than the normal five seconds.
Coming to the corner, his nose is hit with the smell of food. The scent reminds him that he's just woken up at and that the last time he ate was yesterday afternoon. It's obvious that Shekar ordered food, because he doesn't cook. He can't cook. This means that he's in the kitchen right now.
Again, Jai comes to the conclusion that he can't face him. Maybe he should go to the bathroom or his room, even better. But his empty stomach nags at him to fill it with food. There's no way that he can go another hour or two without any. He starts to think, maybe if he ignores him that he'll just leave him alone. This seems like a bad decision, because if he tries to ignore him, he would definitely say something.
Jai exhales, deciding that he just won't say anything. If he gets mad, then so be it. No one can make him talk if he doesn't want to. Scooping up all his pride and courage, he makes his appearance in the open space. He only gets about as far as six feet when he catches Shekar's attention.
"Oh, you up."
He walks straight into the kitchen, not giving an answer.
Jai pulls the fridge open, looking through it as if there isn't food laid out on the bar table.
"Um, good mornin'?"
Still no answer. The air of silence confuses Shekar.
"Hello? Jai, you'on hear me talkin' to you?"
Shekar doesn't know which he hates more, Jai ignoring him or him looking through that empty ass fridge when he knows that there's food sitting on the table for him.
"What the fuck are you doin'? Yo, get out the fuckin' fridge. My nigga, I know you hear me speakin'. Why you ignorin' me?"
Jai stood still for a minute, closing the door after.
"Take a seat and eat, that's what I bought the food fo'."
He walked sluggishly to the barstools, taking a seat next to him. He looks through the plastic bag and pulls out a sandwich. It's an everything bagel with pastrami, cheese, bacon and ketchup. His favorite. He feels a slight pang in his heart for having ignored him.
"Y'know how hard it is to find a corner store out here? And these muhfuckers is expensive, all fo' you to just ignore me? The fuck issat shit?"
"Sorry, thank you."
