There is not a day goes by where Jai and Shekar don't spend time together. At first it was just watching some Tv together or hanging out more. But as the autumn days shortened into winter ones, the wind blew harder and the last of the golden autumn leaves fell off their trees, their time together only increased. During these times, they wouldn't be doing anything but be in each other's beds, hugging and feeling on one another. They've become hermits over the past month.
Shekar's friends would see less and less of him, while acquaintances to Jai couldn't depend on him for a simple text back. Shekar had become hard to reach since his phone is almost always on 'Do Not Disturb'. It's been almost two months since they've last slept in separate beds. If Jai goes one place, Shekar is right behind him, and vice versa. They don't seem to notice either.
The same thing goes for today. On this frosty day in December, it's dark outside with flurries in the air. Huddled away in the apartment, they're under the covers of Jai's bed. Jai scrolls through a stream of endless tweets while innately rubbing Shekar's back. The calming, repetitive touch has Shekar fighting to stay awake. Jai notices his breathing get fainter and his movement lessening. Every time Shekar pushes his face deeper into his neck or grips his hoodie tighter, his heart swells in his chest. Whenever he stopped rubbing his back, he'd wake from his sleep to tell him to keep going. Small moments like this are what Jai likes the most about the time they spend together.
Still absentmindedly scrolling through Twitter, he comes across a tweet that makes him stop to reflect over the past month. "Shey?"
"...mmh?"
"You think we spend too much time together?"
"...huh?"
"Like... d'you think we be spendin' too much time together?"
"I... ion know? Do it matter?"
"When was the last time you hung out witcho peoples?"
"Maybe like, um..." he sucks his teeth. "Shit, ion know. They good, they'a be aight."
"Yeah, but they prolly wanna see you."
Shekar sits up, he's confused. Where is this coming from? "What's good witchu?"
"Nothin', I'm just sayin', what if we spendin' too much time together? Y'know I like spendin' time witchu, but maybe we gotta spend at least a lil' bit of time apart. Like, when was the last time we ain't just come home and lay up in the bed? This don't mean ion like you or I'm doin' some sneak shit, but maybe we just need to spend a lil' time apart."
Shekar looks off to the side and takes Jai's words into consideration. He doesn't think they spent that much time together. Even if he did, that wouldn't be a bad thing. Couples are supposed to enjoy spending time with each other.
"I guess." He sulks.
"I promise I don't hate you boo, but ian tryna steal you from yo peoples. Aight?" Jai taps his cheek when he doesn't answer, getting his eye contact. "Aight?"
"Yeah," he says, sounding defeated.
"Look at me. We could still sleep in the same bed and everythin', just spend some time witcho friends."
"I know."
Jai pinches his chin. "Gimme kiss cause you look sad, and it's makin' me sad." Shekar leans in and gives him a smooch before lying back down and hugging him.
"What aboutchu," Shekar asks.
"Whatchu mean?"
"You'an got no friends."
