The next morning as Dax woke up, he realized a smell in the air. A tasty smell. He got out of bed and got dressed. He went down through the hallway and he passed the living room, then he made it into the kitchen where his mom was making breakfast. He looked at her and said “Hey mom, since when exactly do you make breakfast?” His mother looked at him with a stare that would stop a heart then apologize and kiss it and start it again. “I know how to cook, Daxon. I'm not some mother who has maids and butlers to cook and do work for them. That's what my husband is for.” His mother said jokingly.
“Yes, so how does Brian feel about that?” Dax said to his mother with a smirk. Dax's mother was just as sarcastic as Dax, but she knew when to stop. “Dax let me just tell you something. Brian will do whatever I say because-” Then Brian stepped in and interrupted “ Because why?” Dax stopped eating his breakfast and looked at his mother. “Because I have you wrapped around my finger.” said Dax's mother. Brian stepped closer and closer to her and right when he was barely touching noses when with her, he said “That's right you do.” as he smiled and gave her a kiss.
“You sick people always have to do that when I'm eating, come on!” said Dax with a little bit of milk dripping out the side of his mouth. “Well Dax there comes a time when you get to a certain age when-” “I know how the rest goes. My dad gave me that talk and I am not ready for my step dad to give it to me. Thank you.” Dax said in quick response. Brian looked at him. Then he said “Dax, I know how the talk goes but just listen. One day your gonna find a girl that you will kiss. Trust me.” “ That's sick. But I know.” said Dax.
Dax stared at his food and drifted into his mind. Dax had a dad once. A father to talk to about girls. His dad is gone now and he is not coming back. But Dax has a new dad. A dad that was there. A dad that cared for his mom. A dad that got her, most of the time. But Dax could never confide in him. Dax still missed his dad. But its been 7 years. When Dax was 9. His dad passed away in a car crash. A car crash that killed 4 people, including his dad and uncle. The driver was a stupid drunk college kid in a car with his two best friends. The driver was the only one that made it out alive. Dax wanted him dead but he knew that's not what his dad would want. He also thought, when he grew older, that the driver probably had enough anyway with killing his friends and two other people.
Dax always thought about his father, but he also needed to let go. “The thing about saving lives is losing your own in the process.”,thought Dax. He knew he had to be strong for his mother and his sister. He liked Brian though. Brian was the best step dad a boy his age could ask for.
“So Brian. What are you gonna work on today?” asked Dax as he finished eating his breakfast. “Well I'm gonna finish up making that new hard drive faster. Do you think Jessica can come over after school and help me?” responded Brian. Dax chuckled at the thought of a grown man needing a 16 year old's help, but Dax knew that Jess was the smartest girl he knew, so it all made sense. “Ya, I'll can see if she can.” then the doorbell rang and Dax got up to answer it. It was Kevin “Hey Dax! Hey Dax's parents!” Dax's parents both answered “Hey Kevin.” Dax started to gather his things and proceeded out the door. “Bye guys.” he said as he walked out the door with Kevin. Dax thought about his dad, but it only hurt. Just a little bit.
