Chapter 3- The Look of Love

When Dax woke up, he was in the nurses office. The girl was next to him. She brought him to the office along with Kevin, but he went to his class. She stayed because she got hurt too. Dax got up and stared at the girl. She stared at him. They stared at each other. She began to speak “Thank you. For helping me that is.” She hugged him and he hugged her. Then he looked into her eyes and said “Your very much welcome. Thank you for trying to help me.” She stared again before saying “I just... I just don't like seeing people being bullied and helpless, but the way you fought back after I went down. That was amazing. No one has ever stood up for me like that. So thank you um...” Dax realized what was going on. The problem was that she didn't know his name so he responded with “Dax. My name is Dax. Dax Embrey. That's my name. Yes sir....er... ma'am.” She giggled and began to walk out because she felt better.

Just as she was about to leave, she turned and said “My name is Tori, by the way. Tori Bellus. I'll see you in a few minutes, Dax.” she smiled at Dax and he was confused “A few minutes?” “Oh ya! I forgot to mention that I looked in your bag and found your schedule and we have the same classes, so ya. A few minutes.” she said as she continued to smile at him. “So why were you going through my stuff?” Dax said questionably. “I wanted to know who I was in here with.” she said. Then Dax smiled and blushed because he realized that he had made a fool out of himself for no reason, since she already knew his name. “Nice. Nice” he said as he stared at the ground, then at her.

He simply couldn't get her off his mind. “Well see you around Tori...um Bellus? That's a name that fits you.” Dax said as he smiled at her. She smiled back and asked “Why does it fit?” He looked at her as she was about to walk out and she turned her back to wait for his reply. Dax looked at her and said “Because it's beautiful.” she blushed. He blushed. “Well bye Dax. And thank you. That was very sweet.” she said as she walked out. Dax was just sitting there thinking about what just happened. He actually talked to a girl. He hadn't felt this way since he met Jess. He remembers that day very well. That was the day he found his powers.

The day Dax met Jess, Dax and his sister, May, were driving in their truck when Dax fell asleep and had a nightmare about his dad. Dax had nightmares about his father a lot. But this one made him furious. He dreamed that he saw the driver ram into his dads car on a dare. A dare to gently touch the car as a test of braveness... more like stupidity. Anyhow, Dax saw the look in the drivers eye. No emotion. Dax was mad. On the outside he was burning the leather of the truck and May swerved off the road and Dax flew out and landed in the new girl's yard. Jess's yard. Jess and her sisters, Jayden and Riley, came out to see what happened when they saw Dax's body on the ground.

Jayden and Riley went in to call an ambulance. Jess tried to help Dax, then Dax started moving. His arm, which had broken, snapped back to normal and his jaw did too. The open cuts from the glass disappeared.

He looked up and saw Jess and said “Where am I?” she said “You're okay don't worry. I'm here.” then a white light.

Dax woke up in a hospital. With Jess next to him. “Hey” Dax said as he looked at Jess. “Hey” she said in reply. “Am...Am I dead?” he asked. She giggled and shook her head no. “Thank goodness!” Dax said as he let out a relieved sigh. They talked for the whole evening after that. They grew close in the months that passed. She cared for him. She knew he was special. She kissed him. His first kiss. He felt better. He felt surrounded. He felt like he was the first person to make him feel special since his dad died. They were both 12, but Jess would have a birthday in two weeks so she was older.

But on the day Dax met Jess. That night, in the hospital. They came. The guardians. To have him join them. That is the day Dax become a hero.

After all that thinking Dax looked around the nurses office and said “What a good way to start the day off.” He thought about Jess. He thought about Tori. Jess wasn't interested in him. So he had to move on and keep their friendship the way it was. He couldn't get Tori out of his mind. In an instant, he was in love. She had the look. The look of love.
