I knew today wasn't going to go well, but never did I expect it to go like this. The events that led to me to running down the street until I couldn't go any further continue to play in my head as I sit here on the cold park bench. Now, I sit here with the last thing my mother had said to me playing in my head like a song playing on repeat.

My mom had come home drunk again. I knew she was drunk before I even saw her because of the door slamming as she walked in. Then came the fight. This was nothing new, but of course I said one thing that hit her hard, even if she was completely wasted. "Dad wouldn't have done this to me. He wouldn't have left me here alone all the time."

I never meant what I said to her when we had arguments. This time just really had set me off. My mother has always blamed me for my dad's death ever since I was 10. My dad and I were driving home from the store one night when a dog came out of nowhere. My dad swerved into the other lane, trying to avoid the dog, when a car hit us. My dad was killed on impact, while I was left with some minor injuries. I'm 16 now and nothing has changed since the funeral. As soon as my mom gets home from work, she goes straight to the club or bar and gets wasted.

As the words left my mouth, it looked as if their was the slightest bit of emotion other than hatred in her eyes. It looked like... pain. "You are the worst daughter anyone could have! Get out and never come back!" The tears I was trying so hard to hold back started to roll down my cheeks as I registered what exactly she had said.

Suddenly, I was pulled back to the present by the feeling of someone watching me. I looked to my right and see a boy sitting next to me. He looked to be about the same age as me with jet black hair and icy blue eyes. When he realized I had actually come out of my thoughts, he asked me, "Are you okay?" "I'm fine." I replied as I became interested with the cold, frosty ground. It was about one o'clock in the morning when my mom had come home from the bar, who knows what time it is now. As the time of day crosses my mind I become curious of why this boy was out here too.

"I know you're not okay, and they say it's better to vent to a stranger then someone you know." The mystery boy said.

By the look of his intense gaze, it seems as though he already knows exactly what happened, but how?

"Well I would at least like to know who you are and what you're doing here before I tell you anything."

He turned to face me while sitting on the bench. "My name is Cole. What's your name?"

I stared at him intently, still not sure if I should trust him yet. I guess just telling him my name couldn't be that bad, but why did he ignore my second question. "My name is Alex. Now answer my second question: What are you doing here?"

He peered up at the sky and watched the stars for a minute or two before saying, " I like to watch the night sky. If I watch them long enough, it begins to feel as if I have become one with the night."

That was definitely not the answer I was expecting, but I do wish I could become one with the night right now and just disappear into the darkness.

"Well I can't make you become one with the night and darkness, but maybe if you told me what happened I could help you." Cole said as he waited for me to explain.

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to say that out loud." I felt my cheeks burn as the embarrassment sank in. Wait, what did he mean by he could help me? I barley even know this guy.

"I don't know. I just met you, how could you possibly help me?" I say as the curiosity takes over.

"What if I told you I could give you a gift?" How could a present help me right now when I have nowhere to go, and no one to go to? A gift is the last thing that would help me right now.

Cole must have seen the confused look on my face, so he began to explain further. "Alex, what if I cloud give you a gift that would change everything. You would be removed from whatever situation you were in and be brought to where you need to be or even just to get away from it all in the blink of an eye." Okay, now I am convinced this guy is absolutely insane.

"Yeah, right. That would be great and all, but sadly, it's not possible." Cole looked like he had expected this answer. He sat there and stared at me for a while longer. I felt as if his crystal blue eyes were looking right through my gray eyes straight into my soul.  I shuddered as a gust of wind blew through the park, but our gaze didn't break once.

I finally feel  as if I have gained control over my body back and close my eyes, no longer feeling as if Cole can see into my soul. When I open my eyes again, Cole is still sitting in front of me, but we are no longer in the park sitting on the bench in the middle of the night. Now, there is only the sun beating down on us with nothing but an empty road and sand stretching across the land for miles.

How did we get here? Or, an even better question: where is here?

A/N: Hello! I know this chapter is fairly short, but trust me, they will get longer and a lot better. There will also be quite a bit of action in most of the book as you continue to read it. This is also my first book, so I'm sorry if it's not very good. I will go back through and edit it... eventually :P

Thanks for reading, and please vote and comment. Let me know what you think and some things you want to happen in the book. I'm open to suggestions. :)
