Lauren loves the sound of a softball bat striking the ball. There's something refreshing about the loud thunk that permeates through the air, that sharp noise that cuts through the atmosphere like a knife on butter. It's both scary and satisfying at the same time. It's satisfying because it reminds her of the home runs and the triples and the games they managed to win in the past.
It's scary because it sounds like the noise a metal bat makes when it hits someone over the head. And boy, does Lauren want to hit someone on the head right about now.
Lauren's object of hatred is none other than the soccer captain, Camila Cabello. While those who've worked with Lauren firsthand would say that she's generally a likable, agreeable person, there's something about the smug look on Camila's face that makes Lauren's blood boil. She's certain that Camila's charming smile and easygoing personality has given her a huge advantage in life, and though Lauren is not one to be envious, she can't help but feel as if life is incredibly unfair. She's no god, but she sort of feels like it's up to her to... tip the scales, as one would say. Even the odds.
And it's not like it hasn't happened in the years before, but it's the first time that it has happened with Lauren as softball captain. And the type of shit that Camila pulls doesn't fly with Lauren.
So the first time it happens, Lauren gives Camila Cabello a hard time because Camila is pretty and sweaty and Lauren doesn't know how to act around those types of people. The type of naturally gorgeous girls that could make her heart flutter one moment, only to break it into pieces the next.
But it's not Lauren's preconceived notion about Camila Cabello that irritates her the most.
What ultimately grates Lauren is that the first time it happens isn't the last time it does. It happens almost every day, disrupting not only the softball team's conditioning but the soccer team's as well.
The first time it happens makes Lauren want to describe Camila in colorful words. The first time it happens goes like this.
