Pikeswood, 1899
The summer of 1899 had been unusually warm, the air heavy with the scent of blooming wildflowers and the distant hum of cicadas. Adelaide Palmer, the youngest daughter of the esteemed Palmer family, found herself wandering the edge of the ancient forest that bordered Pikeswood. She often sought solace here, away from the prying eyes and rigid expectations of her family.
It was on one such afternoon that she first encountered Gabriel.
He emerged from the shadows of the forest, his eyes dark and intense, his presence both unsettling and strangely magnetic. Gabriel was tall, with the rugged look of someone who had lived a life far removed from the genteel world Adelaide inhabited. She knew instantly who he was – the son of a notorious bandit who had been the bane of Pikeswood's authorities for years.
"You're not supposed to be here," she said, her voice trembling with a mix of fear and curiosity.
"Neither are you," he replied with a crooked smile, his eyes locking onto hers.
Despite the warning bells ringing in her mind, Adelaide found herself drawn to him. There was something about Gabriel – something wild and free – that spoke to a part of her that had long been stifled by the constraints of her upbringing.
Their meetings became more frequent, each encounter deepening the bond between them. Adelaide would steal away from her family's grand mansion, her heart pounding with anticipation as she made her way to their secret spot in the forest. There, beneath the canopy of ancient trees, they shared whispered conversations and stolen kisses, their love growing with each passing day.
But their idyll was not to last. One fateful evening, Jasper Palmer, Adelaide's father, discovered their secret. He had always been a man of stern principles and unyielding discipline, and the sight of his beloved daughter in the arms of a bandit's son was more than he could bear.
"Adelaide!" Jasper's voice thundered through the clearing, his face contorted with rage. "What are you doing with this scoundrel?"
"Father, please," Adelaide begged, her eyes filling with tears. "I love him."
"Love?" Jasper spat the word as if it were a curse. "You will end this madness at once. You are never to see him again, do you understand?"
Adelaide nodded, her heart breaking as she looked into Gabriel's eyes, silently begging for forgiveness. But even as she agreed to her father's demands, she knew in her heart that she could never truly let Gabriel go.
They continued to meet in secret, their love burning even brighter under the cover of darkness. In the secluded corners of the forest, they found solace in each other's arms, sharing passionate embraces and whispered promises. Gabriel spoke of a future where they could be together, far from the oppressive rules of Pikeswood and the shadow of her father's disapproval.

The forest was alive with the sounds of summer – the distant chirping of crickets, the rustle of leaves in the gentle breeze, and the occasional call of a night owl. Adelaide made her way through the underbrush with practiced stealth, her heart racing in anticipation of the rendezvous. The moon hung low in the sky, casting a silvery glow over the path that led to their secret meeting place.
When she finally arrived at the secluded glade, Gabriel was already there, waiting for her. He leaned against the trunk of an ancient oak tree, his dark eyes reflecting the moonlight. At the sight of him, Adelaide felt a rush of emotion that left her breathless. Every time they met, it was as if the world around them ceased to exist, and there was only the two of them, bound by a love that defied all reason.
