"Sarah, I have a question for you..." Mary calls for her girlfriend sheepishly.
"What's up, Mary?" Sarah replies wondering what her girlfriend has to tell her. "What would you do if I had to leave for a long time?"
"I never thought about it but I don't think I'd last without you."
"Oh, I see, I'll see you tomorrow then?"
"Of course I will Mary, I love you." "I love you too."
The next day, Mary doesn't show up to school and isn't responding to any of Sarah's texts. Sarah receives a text from me.
The text reads: "Dear Sarah, it's me, Mary, I'm sorry i didn't tell you this before, but I have cancer. I don't have much longer left, i just wanted to tell you, if you care, come visit me in the hospital, i want to spend my last moments with you. Love Mary."
Sarah's mind races as she dashes out of the school and into her car desperately driving as fast as possible to come see Mary before she died.
Sarah races into Mary's hospital room and Mary's voice is dry as she welcomes Sarah. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you yesterday..." Mary says turning her head away in shame. Sarah pulls Mary's head towards her again, "It's okay love, please stay with me."
Silent tears fall down their faces as they enjoy one another's embraces.
When they pull away Mary's face is pale and her bright blue eyes now dull and cloudy.
Mary pulls Sarah in for a kiss her hands weakly holding her cheeks in her hands. Sarah can tell this is their final kiss and pours every ounce of love she can into the kiss. Sarah feels Mary's hands loosen their grip and fall to her side, she flat lined.
The nurse marks the time of death and Sarah screams in agony holding onto the sheets that Mary's body was laying on.After Mary's body was taken away Sarah runs to Mary's house searching through her closet for anything that still had her scent. Sarah is unable to leave Mary's house. It was Sarah's comfort place with everything Mary once loved and it had Mary's scent everywhere.
The only time Sarah could leave was for Mary's funeral. Despite the heartache it caused her, she knew Mary deserved a proper goodbye.
Sarah arrives at the funeral and sets Mary's phone inside the casket as she is buried and leaves a bouquet of red roses symbolizing love and Lillies of the Valley to symbolize forever, put together, forever love, she heads home and finds herself texting Mary's phone for comfort. She know's she'll never respond but she can't help but find comfort in the fact that she is linked to her in some way even if Mary can't respond to Sarah. Sarah get's new flowers every week and never found another love.
