After learning about the situation, they believe this place is closely linked to the Abyss Order and are therefore investigating deeper... Luffy then found some kind of sign.

Luffy: Hey, there are signs of hilichurl activity here. Could these be the ones we were asked to check out?

Dainsleif: Hold on. You still haven't told me what you're doing here. Most travelers wouldn't venture down this way.

Paimon: We took a commission from the Adventurers' Guild to investigate The Chasm. A lot of hilichurls have been gathered here, and the requester wants to know why. It looks like we've found our first clue.

Dainsleif: Do you want the answer?

Paimon: Huh? Do you mean you know anything about this?

Dainsleif: As it happens, I do.

Lumine: Does this have anything to do with the upside-down city?

Dainsleif: It's understandable that you did not perceive anything unusual. What makes this place so strange is that the environment here weakens the effect of the curse.

Paimon: The curse? Oh! Paimon remembers the last time you guys said that Khaenri'ah's people were cursed to immortality or something.

Dainsleif: For centuries, I have suffered daily from the curse. But here... I feel a small amount of relief. My body is telling me to stay.

Luffy: Huh? Did I miss something?

Paimon: Did you even pay attention, Luffy!?

Luffy: *Grins* Nope.

Lumine: It's okay. I'll explain in short.

After Lumine briefly explained the curses to Luffy.

Luffy: So this place weakens the curse? That's amazing! But how?

Dainsleif: That is something that I shall need to investigate. To the best of my knowledge, the Abyss Order does not have the technology to achieve this.

Lumine: So you're saying...

Paimon: The hilichurls that come here are also from...

Dainsleif: Indeed. Do you know why hilichurls wear masks?

Luffy: I think so?

Paimon: You don't know, don't you.

Luffy: Yeah.

Lumine: I'm not sure...

Dainsleif: It's to hide their appearance, lest they see their reflection. Compared to how they remember themselves, it is a terrible sight, one that causes them great despair.

Lumine: So these hilichurls really are from...

Dainsleif: The curse of "immortality" denies death to those afflicted with it, but it does not mean they will never die. Their body and soul will erode until they are virtually nonexistent.

Paimon: So you mean there's a way to undo it?

Dainsleif: No. When the hilichurls realize the end is near, they seek a calm and dark corner to say goodbye to their suffering. And a place that eases their curse would be their first choice.
