The next day, Konstantin was waiting patiently for me outside the school again. The next day, the same and gradually it became a ritual.
He would just walk me home, sometimes we would stop at a local café or in the park. But Kon was always professional and, to my disappointment, never crossed the established boundaries.
And I began to accept that we would never be more than friends.
Christian and the other alphas really did stay away and, to my relief, the heckling and vulgar comments disappeared completely. But they didn't stop showing interest in me.
Especially Chris. He used to join me every day at lunchtime or in the library and impress me with his wisdom.
Just like today.
In an empty classroom, where I was quickly finishing my chemistry assignment, Christian suddenly appeared and sat down uninvited.
"Want some help?" He asked, nodding his head towards my school notebook where I was writing down the chemistry equations.
"No, I've almost got it."
"Yeah, but you got it wrong," he said as he examined my work.
I slammed the notebook shut with a sigh of resignation and accepted the fact that I was going to get an F. Then I glanced at Chris. I noticed that his blonde hair was cut short, apparently he had decided to change his hairstyle, but in my opinion it wasn't a very good choice.
Without a word, he took my notebook and began to correct the errors in the equations. He seemed to have changed his strategy in the last few days, trying to be nice instead of shouting and talking rubbish.
However, the change in his approach scared me quite a bit. If he was being a jerk, at least I knew how to react.
He finished correcting my assignment and handed my notebook back to me.
"You're welcome," he grinned ironically when I didn't thank him.
"I didn't ask for any help," I snapped, hoping someone else would finally enter the classroom. Unfortunately, we were still a good ten minutes away from the start of the Chemistry class, which meant that none of my classmates would show up for at least the next nine minutes.
"He's not your alpha," Chris said out of nowhere, and when I didn't respond, he continued, "He may be waiting for you outside the school every day, but he's not." His eyes slid down my neck, "He hasn't even marked you."
"Why would he do that?" I said in disgust. "Such primitive practices may appeal to you, but not to me."
He glanced at me quizzically, then ran his fingers down the side of my neck. It must have been some sort of alpha thing, because Konstantin touched me like that sometimes, and so did Chris. But one look from me and he pulled his hand away.
"And what would you like, Adri, tell me," he moved so close to me that I thought he was going to kiss me, but he stopped himself just in time.
"You smell amazing," he whispered dreamily, and I was afraid he was going to press his huge nose right up against my neck.
"Get away from me or I'll tell Konstantin."
He backed away when I mentioned that name, but not far enough.
Unlike Kon, I found Christian's scent completely unremarkable. It wasn't unpleasant or anything, but I hadn't really noticed it before. Only now, with him sitting so close to me, did I detect a slightly sweet scent that reminded me of vanilla.
"I know he's not your Alpha," Chris repeated after a moment. "You have his scent on you, but that's all. You're friends at most. You haven't slept together or anything, he hasn't even kissed you. I can tell."
