song: girlfriend in a coma by the smiths
TW: gagging, throwing up
No one told them that comas aren't like sleep. In fact, it's quite the opposite.
Roy and Jason had been disturbed to see your eyes lazily and uncoordinatedly opening and shutting and mouth moving with little pained noises here and there that made them want to cry. Sometimes, you'd squeeze their hands back and sometimes, it was limp.
It's definitely not how they imagined your first time seeing the Bat Cave to be.
For the first week, Jason goes back and forth with himself.
He hates how your last conversation had been an argument and about something he'd already apologized for. He'd been a fucking dick and he knew it and now here you are.
Ultimately, he stays away for decent periods of time, losing himself in work. Without you, the dynamic doesn't feel right. It feels...
Empty.
He feels as much at fault as he knows Roy does.
They'd both done their best to protect you, but it hadn't been enough. You aren't dead, but you may as well be.
They thought the gala was bad, no, Cadmus had been bad. This? This was as close to death as anyone in the family had gotten ever since Jason took a plunge into the Lazarus Pit.
It isn't until Damian finally stops by one day to talk some sense into him that Jason finally sits with you. Damian himself admits that he's been avoiding this area of the cave ever since the incident and had needed some convincing from Jon.
The whole incident has been heavily weighing down on each member of the Bat Family in its own way.
Jason ends up taking Damian's advice.
At first, he reads in silence, trying to ignore the way your body jerks and attempting to tune out the pained gasps you sometimes produce. On the third day, he finally begins to read your favorite book out loud. By the end of the week, he's painting your chipped nails a fresh coat of red.
Jason stays late into the evening until Roy comes down and swaps out with him.
Eventually, the rest of the Bat Family slowly starts to trickle in.
Tim and Steph start coming over to read you comics. Meanwhile, Barbara and Dick make sure to bring you fresh flowers every few days and recount their latest missions.
The rest of the month starts getting better from here.
Kind of.
"Maybe Lian can finally see her?" Roy trails behind a busy-looking Bruce.
Alfred shoots Roy a sympathetic look as Bruce ignores the redhead in favor of picking out a tie from the options Alfred's presenting. He'd been completely obsessed with his new fling, almost as if he were throwing himself into it to avoid the happenings of the Bat Cave.
Like father, like son. Both men are currently avoiding the situation at hand and any and every feeling involved in the matter.
No matter how much Roy pries, Jason refuses to talk about you, not even the books he reads to you. Meanwhile, Bruce is content to act like nothing's wrong. It's a bit fucking chilling and, ultimately, Roy feels hung out to dry. He can't even talk to Lian about you because he doesn't want to worry her anymore than she already is.
It fucking sucks.
"That part of the manor is off limits," Bruce warns lightly as he does every time Roy or Jason brings this up. "It's hard enough with you knowing."
