Today is the last day Lydia's father is going to be home before taking off to England for more business reasons.
"Baby you want to help me ice the cake before daddy gets home?" Tracey asked Lydia while getting another butter knife from the drawer.
"Yes mommy!" Lydia smiled and stood on a kitchen chair. "What's the cake for?""Well your dad is going away for a bit again and-"
"Again? Why can't daddy just stay home?"
"Well the world doesn't work like that sweetie. We have to pay off things."
"Why not pay people with hugs and cookies? It always seems to work with me."
"I wish it were that way baby." Lydia's mother sighed. "Can you grab me the sprinkles?"
"Yes mommy." Lydia climbed down from the chair and got the sprinkles. "Here you go mommy."
Lydia walked over to her mother giving her the sprinkles."Thank you sweetie. Now go look out the window and check to see when your father is coming."
Lydia ran to the living room and propped herself onto the couch facing the window.
"Haz we are on a mission. We are on the look out for my daddy. He has a gray car that looks like an angry beetle."I laugh a little and Lydia catches me in the act.
"Haz this is serious business. I could get two slices of cake! Count it two!"
Lydia and I are both startled by the sound of a car rolling into the drive way.
"Mommy!" Lydia gasped. "Daddy's here!"
Tracey licked what was left of the icing off her fingers and walked with Lydia to open the door for Bruce.
As the door swung open Lydia was so happy.
"Daddy!" She smiled as Bruce bent down to hug her."Hey baby." he squeezed her tighter. "How was your day."
"It was great! Mommy and I have a surprise for you. I know you'll like it!"
"That's very generous of you. But I need to speak with mommy for a moment. Go play with Haz he probably misses you."
Lydia and I went off into the kitchen. As she was picking at a napkin I was listening in on Lydia's parents conversation.
"The new boss didn't like my presentation. I asked them to reconsider my idea because I thought they were being overbearing about it. Then they said that they don't need people like me ruining the company."
"But you've been working there for 10 years. How could they just toss you out like that?"
"The new boss is two levels higher than I am so I can't change his mind. I just have the trip to London then I gotta be out of their for good."
"I can quit my job at Lydia's school and go back to working as a nurse."
"That's ok babe, Lydia needs you because I'm never around enough. You know what I'll get my friend Jimmy to hook me up with an interview at his company."
"Honey we don't want to keep Lydia waiting. I don't want her getting upset."
Bruce and Tracey then began making their way to the kitchen appearing to be happy.
"Can we cut the cake now mommy?" Lydia asked.
"Yes we can." Tracey nodded cutting into the cake. "Does Haz want a piece?"
Lydia gave me a look and I nodded in approval.
"Yes Haz wants a piece mommy."Tracey plopped a piece of cake onto a bright green plate and gave it to Lydia to give to me.
"Here you go Haz."
As Tracey finished dishing out all the cake Lydia was rambling to her dad about her dream.
"And then the magical spoon told the cat that forks are dangerous but we still need them." Lydia taking another bite of her cake.
"That sounds like a great dream Lydia." he said smiling. "Is Haz done with his cake?"
"No. He's just shy when there's other people around him. But I finished mine." Lydia said hopping out of her seat to clean up after everyone else. "Mommy. Daddy. I don't want to sound mean but Haz wants to eat and you can't be here when he eats."
"Oh ok. We understand." Tracey said motioning Bruce to step out of the room.
As they exited I 'ate' some cake as Lydia told me her plans with her father for today. I feel really terrible because I know that she doesn't understand that he is leaving immediately.
"Is Haz done yet?" Bruce asked.
"Yes he is. You can come back now." Lydia responded waiting for her parents to come back in the kitchen.
"Daddy I was thinking that tonight we could watch frozen together and eat gummy bears." Lydia smiled hopefully.
"Oh sweetie I would love to but I can't." Bruce announced sorrowful. "I'm leaving again soon."
"Oh." Lydia said with a blank emotion on her face. She got out of her chair as I followed and went up to her room.
And that was the way her child hood was most of the time. Her dad came and went and one day he never came back. Bruce was a good man he didn't leave on purpose. Thanks to a drunk driver Bruce died on impact during a car accident. His guardian angel couldn't do anything about it. Bruce had a strong connection with his guardian angel but the car crash was fate. No one can stop your fate.
I remember Lydia's childhood and how wonderful it was to have her acknowledge me. Its not like that anymore though. Ever since her father died she changed. And all I know it's not for her own good.
