My Father's Masculinity

The door knocks down
It gets quiet around
and you can smell him 'til here
he reeks of anger and beer
And his hand is fast
The colour will last
for at least a couple of days
But it's his love-showing-ways

He would never want to hurt you
and your brother, and your mother, too
And he's trying, of course
They don't need a divorce

He tries to convince you
and you attempt to believe, too
If tomorrow he'll survive
you promise to cut him out of your life

But if he needs you so bad
does it matter if he's mad?
