Truth potion

Spell type: Charm, complex

Effect: When consumed, the subject tells the truth. [My witch does not like it when I tell the truth. She calls it 'gloating'.] If brewed properly, the subject will speak only the truth, and will be incapable of lying. At lower potencies, this charm hinders the drinker's ability to lie.

This is an invaluable tool for your detective's toolkit. Successful interrogation of a suspect, or even a client, can speed up your investigation significantly. [The truth is not always welcome. The last time I told my witch the truth, she threw a cupcake at me. This is despite me being correct.]

Ingredients:

Water [You will need this for all your spells.]

Fire quartz, 50 carats [Not the cheapest spell.]

Basil - one handful, finely chopped [Note that 'finely chopped' does not mean that you hack at the basil until the remains defy the basic rules of geometry. This is potion making, not the gladiator's arena. Also, 'one handful' assumes that you are human. If you are a dragon or a fairy, for the love of Zilitron, do not use one handful of basil.]

Leaf of Athena [Athena refers to a sentient plant species inhabiting the Deadly Desert. Upon approach, you will be given one philosophical question to answer. Answer incorrectly, and Athena will shoot you full of spears. Good luck getting this ingredient. Hee hee hee.]

Instructions:

1. Fill a standard cauldron with water until it is half full. [You may use any kind of water for this spell. But it must be only water. No, you cannot use orange juice. I should not even have to say this.]

2. Bring to boil. [This must be a proper boil, not a simmer.]

3. Add basil. [It is important that you add the basil before the fire quartz. Many people go wrong at this step.]

4. After 5 minutes, add fire quartz.

5. When spirals of green smoke start to rise from the cauldron, add leaf of Athena. [Do not be stingy with the leaf of Athena. If you substitute with leaf of Ares, your spell will not be as potent. Many do this as the Ares plant only requires that you defeat it in a swordfight in exchange for its leaves, and plants are no good with swords.]

6. Boil for ten minutes, then leave to stand for a further ten.

Result:

Your potion should be forest green. If it is lighter, you have not added enough leaf of Athena. The smell should be neutral. If scent is present, you may have added too much basil. A zest is normal, but the potion should not taste overly spicy. [It also tingles if you dip your paw in it. Try it.]

You will now have a very valuable potion. Use it wisely. Truth is more precious than any gemstone. [Helpful tip: not all people see the value in truth. Take my witch, for example. Her new outfit did make her look like a mini hippopotamus with gas. This is not my fault. She did not need to throw the cupcake at me.]
