Imam Muslim رحمه الله said in his Sahih (1218):
Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah and Ishaq bin Ibrahim informed us that Hatim bin Isma'eel al-Madani reported from Ja'far bin Muhammad, who narrated from his father (Muhammad bin Ali bin al-Husain bin Ali bin Abi Talib) saying:
"We entered upon Jabir b. Abdillah رضي الله عنهما who began inquiring about the people (who had come to see him) until it was my turn. I said, 'I am Muhammad bin 'Ali bin Hussain."
He placed his hand upon my head, and opened my upper button and then the lower one, and then placed his palm on my chest, and during those days I was a young boy, and he said:
"Welcome my nephew, ask what you like."
So I asked him and he was blind. The time for prayer came so he stood up covering himself in his mantle. And whenever he placed its ends upon his shoulders, they slipped down because it was short. Another mantle was lying on the coat hanger nearby and he led us in the prayer. (After the prayer) I said to him:
"Tell me about the Hajj of the Messenger of Allah.”
He signed with his hand and folded his fingers, indicating nine...
He said: 'Allah's Messenger ﷺ stayed in al-Madinah for nine years but did not perform Hajj. He then made a public announcement in the tenth year that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would perform the Hajj. A large number of people came to Madinah, all of whom were anxious to follow Allah's Messenger ﷺ and do accordingly.
We went with him until we reached Dhul-Hulayfah. Asma bint Umais gave birth to Muhammad bin Abu Bakr (As-Siddeeq). She sent a message to Allah's Messenger ﷺ asking him what should she do. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Take a bath, pad yourself, and enter into Ihram.'
Allah's Messenger then prayed the two Rak'ah in the mosque, then mounted al-Qaswa (his she-camel) which stood erect with him on its back at al-Baida. I saw as far as I could see in front of me some riders and some on foot, and also on my right and on my left and behind me. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in the midst of us. The Quran was being revealed to him and he knew the true interpretation of the Quran, and whatever he did, we did as well.
He then declared the Oneness of Allah (the Talbiyah) saying: "Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am, You have no partner, here I am. Praise and grace are Yours and sovereignty too. You have no partner."
And the people also pronounced this Talbiyah which is pronounced today. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not object anything of it, and he adhered to his own Talbiyah.
Jabir said: We did not have any other intention but that of Hajj only, being unaware of the Umrah at that season, but when we came with him to the House, he touched the Black Stone, and made seven rounds around the Kabah walking fast three of them and walking normally four.
And while going to the Station of Ibrahim, he recited: "And take the station of Abraham as a place of prayer." (2:125) And this Station was between him and the House. My father said (and I do not know that he had related it from anyone except from the Prophet ﷺ): He recited in the two Rak'ah: Surah al-Ikhlas & Surah al-Kafirun.
He then returned to the Black Stone and kissed it. He then went out of the gate to as-Safa and as he reached it, he recited: "Surely the Safa and Marwah are among the signs of Allah," (2:158) adding: "I begin with what Allah began with."
He first mounted as-Safa until he saw the House, and facing the Qiblah he declared the Oneness of Allah and glorified Him, and said,
"There is truly nothing worthy of worship but Allah alone. There is no partner with Him. To Him belongs the sovereignty, and the praise is due to Him, and He is All-Powerful over everything. There is no true deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, He fulfilled His Promise, helped His servant, and Alone uprooted the Confederates." He then supplicated in between these words three times.
He then descended and walked towards Al-Marwah, and when his feet reached the bottom of the valley, he ran, and when he began to ascend, he walked until he reached Al-Marwah.
He did at Al-Marwah as he had done at As-Safa, and when he came to Al-Marwah for the last time, he said:
"If I had known beforehand what I have come to know afterwards, I would not have brought sacrificial animals and would have performed Umrah. So, he who has not brought the sacrificial animals with him, let him terminate his Ihram and intend an Umrah."
Suraaqah bin Malik bin Ju'shum then got up and asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ:
"O Allah's Messenger, does this apply to this year of ours, or is it forever?"
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ intertwined his fingers and said:
"The 'Umrah has been incorporated in Hajj," adding: "for ever and ever."
