The setting sun burned the evening sky with a mix of flaming orange, yellow, pink, and red. Raven stood on the roof of Titan's Tower, her dark purple hair gently blowing in the evening wind-the scent of the salt in the seawater stung her nose even this high up
Raven was ignoring the sight before her; her eyes were locked on her phone's wallpaper. There he was, her love, John, smiling at her. Her hands absently clicked her phone off, and as she slid it back into her pocket, she couldn't help but wish she could go back to seeing his face.
She understood why he had left, but it didn't stop her heart from longing for his touch. It didn't stop her ears from begging to hear his voice. And it didn't stop the tears from flowing out of her eyes.
Her silent cry was interrupted by the sudden vibration of her phone. She wiped the tears from her face and slowly checked her notifications. Her eyes widened, and she eagerly clicked on the new message John had sent her.
John: Hey, are you okay?
Raven bit her lip in anticipation as she swiftly typed back.
Raven: Yeah, I was meditating. What's going on with you?
To her surprise, John responded quickly.
John: You're lying, I know you're sad. What's going on?
Raven's jaw dropped in surprise, and she looked around nervously. She looked back down at her phone and texted her boyfriend back.
Raven: Alright, I... I miss you, okay? I miss waking up beside you. How much longer are you going to be gone?
Raven stared at her phone, her heart pounding as she waited for John's reply. The setting sun cast long shadows across the rooftop, and the evening breeze carried a cool touch. She felt a mixture of hope and anxiety, her thumb tapping restlessly against the screen.
A few moments later, her phone buzzed again.
John: I miss you too, Pretty Bird. I'm sorry I've been away for so long. Things in Gotham have been... complicated. But I'm coming back soon, I promise.
Raven's eyes softened at his words, a small smile playing on her lips. She could almost hear his voice, the warmth, and sincerity behind his message.
Raven: I understand, John. Gotham needs you. But I need you too. Sometimes, it's hard to be strong without you here.
John's response came quickly, filled with affection.
John: You're one of the strongest people I know, Raven. But I'm coming back. I won't let you wait much longer. We can get through this together.
Raven felt a sense of relief wash over her, the tight knot in her chest loosening. She typed back, her fingers moving with renewed energy.
Raven: Thank you, John. Just hearing that makes me feel better. I love you.
John: I love you too, Pretty Bird. More than you know. I'll be home before you know it.
Raven sighed, her heart feeling lighter than it had in days. She took a deep breath, gazing out at the horizon where the sun was now a blazing sliver about to disappear.
Raven: I'll hold you to that. Stay safe, okay?
John: Always. See you soon.
Raven put her phone away, and the sadness that had gripped her heart was now replaced with a warm anticipation. She knew there were still challenges ahead, but the thought of being reunited with John gave her the strength to face them. She closed her eyes, allowing the evening wind to dry the remnants of her tears, and whispered to the fading sun.
