Professor Slughorn was a wonderful teacher, much less abusive and condescending than our previous Potions Professor. He too was incredibly passionate and talented at his job, which makes him great at his job. Just as he was explaining all the different potions in front of us, the classroom door opened and a flustered looking Harry and Ron stumbled in. "Ah! Harry, Wollemby, come on in!" I let out a quick snigger at his mispronunciation of Ron's name and watched as they bickered over the last two books in the cabinet. It doesn't matter whether you're a wizard or not, no one wants the tatty book from the bottom of the pile.
Harry was left with that book, rather dusty and falling apart. "Lucky me," he mumbled sarcastically and smacked Ronald on the arm with said book. This lesson we were instructed to brew a Draught of living death, which was exceptionally difficult. It was one of the most intricate recipes I'd ever read and we were working separately rather than in pairs. One instruction was the cut Sopophorous Bean and squeeze the juice into the potion, however I couldn't figure out how to do it. Ron couldn't either, but then again he didn't know the difference between clockwise and anti-clockwise most of the time. Glancing over at Harry's workspace, I saw him crushing the bean under a knife! "What are you doing?"
"Crush it, don't cut it."
"No... the instructions specifically say to cut," I wiped the frizzed hair out of my face and stared at him dumbfounded. You should never disobey potions instructions!
"Trust me," he said with a smirk. If he's right, he's getting a slap.Of course, he was correct. Slughorn was most pleased; he rewarded Harry with the Felix Felicis - also known as Liquid Luck - and gave the boy a hug. "Use it well," he wagged a finger at him and sent us all on our way. Thank god it was lunch time now, I needed to shower the steam out of my bushy hair. "Save me a seat please," I smiled briefly at Slughorn's pet and made my way to my dorm, hoping no one would see how tragic I looked. I had almost made it until a dark haired man turned a corner and stopped right in front of me. "Woah!" I yelped and smacked straight into his chest, toppling to the floor. Holy Cricket, that hurt, I cursed at myself and quickly gathered my bearings, standing back up.
"Apologies Miss Granger," Snape spoke with his usual bored tone, "you look dreadful." I scowled at him, how dare he?! "I know, where do you think I'm going Professor?" I snapped, without thinking. Oops. "You dare speak to me in that manner," he grasped my robe in his fist and pulled me towards his face. "Detention, after school." The smirk on his face was almost disgusting and now I'd remembered why I hated him. "Yes Sir." He shoved me back and I scurried off to the common room, my heart thudding. Checking behind my shoulder every few steps, I finally made it to the portrait, said the password and darted inside.
I closed the door behind me and leaned against it. First day back and I have detention, what is going on with me? I knew Ron and Harry would say exactly the same thing. I showered quickly and rushed to the Hall to get some food before it finished, sitting beside Ron who kindly saved me a spot. "What took you so bloody long? We nearly had to send out a search party," he sarcastically said and handed me a plate of food he'd kept for me. Awh that's sweet, I smiled to myself, briefly forgetting about Snape. "I uh, I got detention?" I replied, more as a question and started to eat. Ron and Harry stared at me in surprise and I rolled my eyes. "I know what you're thinking and I'm disappointed in myself too."
During lunch I felt tense, like I was being watched- so much so, I couldn't eat much at all. "Are you gonna eat that?" Ron asked, pointing at my dish of spaghetti and I felt sick just thinking about it. I shook my head, slid it over and left the table without another word. Refusing to look back, I disappeared to the library in hopes I could write my DADA essay in peace, which I did. Just before my fingers cramped up, I smashed the essay in 25 minutes and decided to do some light reading on potion making. The library was so peaceful, only a few other people came here to study- at the back anyway. Most people sit together in the Great Hall during revision sessions but I much preferred it here.
