Chapter 10: I Need Your Attention, Nathan

The growing chasm between Nathan and me had reached a breaking point. Our attempts to patch things up had only highlighted the depth of our disconnect. I found myself in a constant state of longing, yearning for the man who had once been my confidant, my partner, my everything.

One evening, after yet another day of feeling invisible, I decided I could no longer remain silent. Nathan's late hours and perpetual exhaustion had become the norm, and our relationship felt like an afterthought. I needed his attention, his presence, his love.

He came home later than usual, his eyes weary and his steps slow. He barely acknowledged me as he dropped his bag by the door and headed to the kitchen. I followed him, my heart pounding with a mix of frustration and desperation.

"Nathan, we need to talk," I said, my voice trembling.

He glanced at me, his expression a mix of fatigue and irritation. "Alex, I'm really tired. Can we do this later?"

"No," I said firmly, my resolve hardening. "We can't keep putting this off. I need your attention, Nathan. I need to know that you still care about us."

He sighed, leaning against the counter. "What do you want me to say? I'm doing my best. Work is demanding, and I'm under a lot of pressure."

"I understand that," I replied, my voice breaking. "But what about us? It feels like you're not even here anymore. I miss you, Nathan. I miss the way we used to be."

His expression softened slightly, but there was still a distance in his eyes. "I miss that too, Alex. But things have changed. Life is more complicated now."

"That doesn't mean we have to lose each other," I said, stepping closer. "We need to make time for us, to reconnect. I can't keep living like this, feeling invisible and alone."

Nathan rubbed his temples, his frustration evident. "I don't know how to fix this, Alex. I'm stretched so thin as it is."

"Maybe we need to prioritize our relationship," I suggested, my voice trembling. "Schedule time for us, just like we do for work. We need to make an effort, Nathan, or we're going to lose each other."

He looked at me, a mixture of sadness and resignation in his eyes. "I don't want to lose you, Alex. But I don't know if I have anything left to give."

Tears welled up in my eyes as I reached out to him. "Please, Nathan. I need your attention, your love. We need to find a way back to each other."

He took my hand, his grip firm but not reassuring. "I'll try, Alex. I don't want to lose you either. But it's going to take time and effort from both of us."

I nodded, the weight of his words sinking in. "I understand. I'm willing to try if you are."

That night, we sat together on the couch, talking about our fears, our frustrations, and our hopes for the future. It was a tentative step towards rebuilding our connection, but it was a step nonetheless. We both acknowledged the need for change and made a commitment to prioritize our relationship.

The days that followed were challenging. Old habits die hard, and there were times when work threatened to consume Nathan once more. But there were also moments of genuine connection, small gestures that spoke volumes. He started coming home earlier, making time for us to share meals and talk about our days. We planned weekend getaways, brief escapes from the pressures of daily life, where we could focus on each other and rediscover the joy of being together.

It wasn't easy, and there were setbacks along the way. But we were both committed to making it work. We learned to communicate better, to express our needs and listen to each other's concerns. Slowly, the coldness that had settled between us began to thaw, replaced by a warmth that we had thought was lost forever.

One evening, as we sat on the porch watching the sunset, Nathan turned to me, his eyes filled with a sincerity I hadn't seen in months. "Thank you for not giving up on us, Alex. I know it hasn't been easy, but I'm glad we're finding our way back to each other."

I squeezed his hand, a smile spreading across my face. "I never stopped believing in us, Nathan. We still have a long way to go, but as long as we have each other's attention and love, I know we'll make it."

In that moment, I realized that the journey to rebuild our relationship would be ongoing. There would be challenges and setbacks, but there would also be love, laughter, and a renewed commitment to each other. We had faced the brink of losing everything, and in doing so, we had found the strength to fight for what mattered most. Our story was far from over, and with each passing day, we were writing a new chapter filled with hope and possibility.
