CHAPTER 2

A/n: italics= thoughts

"Yes, Mother," I say, looking away. She's just finished scolding me for not getting up on time for school. It happens every morning, so I've stopped caring.

"I need you to stop by the store after school and get some things for me," she instructs as I put on my shoes. She hands me a piece of paper. "Everything I need is on there. Be good today, Y/N. Don't get in trouble." She tries to sound caring, but it comes off as condescending.

"I won't, Mom. Goodbye." I wave tiredly as I walk out the door, heading to school. The sky is gray; it's going to rain later.

Now, I'm sitting in my last class of the day, staring out the window as raindrops begin to land on the glass. I knew it would rain, but why did it have to wait until the end of the day? I guess I'll be walking to the store in the rain.

I open my umbrella, which thankfully was still in my locker, and put on a random playlist. The walk to the store is only about ten minutes, but I still don't enjoy it. As I step under the small awning in front of the store, I start to close my umbrella, only to have water splash onto my face. Could this day get any worse? I think dramatically, shaking off the water as I head into the store.

Suddenly, I see a man run out of the store, clutching a black backpack. He shoves an older lady to the ground as he passes. What an asshole. I walk over to help the lady.

"Are you alright, ma'am?" I ask, helping her to her feet.

"Oh, thank you, dear. I'm just fine," she says as I hand her the purse she dropped. A man in a cashier uniform bursts out of the store.

"COME BACK! SOMEONE STOP HIM! HE JUST ROBBED MY STORE!" the cashier yells, probably hoping for a hero. I look around, but no one steps forward. In the distance, I hear a noise. Was that a gunshot? Without thinking, I start to run. Surprisingly, I'm heading toward the sound, not away from it. I've got to be an idiot.

As I turn the corner, I see the robber dragging a woman by her hair, pointing a gun at her head.

"Please don't! I didn't do anything," the woman sobs, tears streaming down her face.

"SHUT UP!" the man screams.

"Sir, let the girl go," a police officer commands, aiming his gun at the robber.

"You think your little gun scares me? YOU THINK YOU SCARE ME?" the robber yells, he's eyes are bloodshot and his pupils are huge he's clearly high on something.

"WELL, YOU DON'T!" He aims his hand at the officer, and something that looks like a bone starts to extend toward him. He can grow his bones into weapons—that's a powerful quirk. The bone is headed straight for the officer's chest. I have to stop it.

I launch a vine from my hand at the man's bone, snapping it.

"What do you think you're doing, little girl?" he sneers.

"Let that woman go," I demand. I'm scared. I'm really scared. This man could seriously hurt me, but I have to do something.

"I'll let her go if you let me get away," he tries to bargain.
