We stand in the empty hallway and silently stare at each other until Katsuki speaks.
"What are you doing here?" he asks sharply.
"What do you think? I'm a student. I'm learning," I deadpan.
He scoffs. "You know that's not what I mean." His eyes blaze as he takes a step forward. "You just show up after years of silence, and what? You're gonna act like we're strangers?"
"Well, aren't we? Like you said, we haven't spoken in years," I reply, putting my defensive front on once again. Desperately fighting the urge to crash into his arms and have him hold me how he used to, to have him tell me it will all be okay. God, he's right in front of me, and I can't do the only thing I've been dreaming of since the day I lost him.
"Jesus fucking Christ," Katsuki scoffs, running a hand down his jaw roughly. "Cut your bullshit, Y/N."
"What the hell are you talking about?" I ask.
His eyes lock onto mine. "I talked to Deku." His voice is lower now. "Practically had to drag it out of him."
My stomach twists.
"What did he say?" I demand more than ask. Izuku's the only person that knows the whole truth, and I made him promise to never tell Katsuki.
Katsuki's glare deepens. "Oh, not much—just that you're getting fucking married." His voice cracks and he laughs, but it's hollow and sharp.
I freeze.
"Is that all?" I ask, praying that's all Izuku let slip.
Katsuki's nostrils flare as his anger boils over. "What? What the fuck do you mean 'is that all'? Is there more you're hiding from me?" His voice drips with betrayal.
"No, no, I was just..." I sigh in relief. He doesn't know about all the details, which is good—but now, who knows what he thinks, that I cheated on him?
"Just what? Just hiding another secret from me?" he fires back, fast as always.
"I wasn't hiding—" I try to correct him, but I only get cut off.
"Clearly you fucking were! How long have you been planning this, huh? Back when we were together? Back when you told me you—" He stops, biting the words back, but I know what he's thinking.
"Katsuki, please, it's not like that," I defend.
"Then what is it like?"
"I can't tell you. But please, Kat—" I beg him, breaking my character. I know I should just let him believe what he wants, but it hurts me to have him believe I could ever fall for anyone but him—because I couldn't. I could never even dream of it.
"What was I then, Y/N? What—just some game to you? A little toy to fuck around with until you could marry into your perfect little future?" His words hurt more than I imagined. I knew he'd find out one day, but I wasn't prepared for that to come so soon. I wish I could tell him the truth, but I just can't. He would never understand, so as much as it hurts, I force myself to lie, again.
"You were a mistake, Katsuki. A distraction." I look away toward the floor, ashamed.
"You really expect me to believe that?" His voice is low, like he's daring me to lie again.
"I don't care what you believe," I whisper.
We stand there in silence, his chest heaving, my own heart breaking. Then he steps forward, grabbing my wrist—not roughly, but enough to draw my attention.
