In September 2024, Hurricane Helene devastated the Appalachian mountain region in Virginia, Tennessee, South Carolina, and North Carolina. Many homes were lost from severe flooding, and some towns were quite literally washed off the mountain. The loss of life and damage to mountain communities is heartbreaking, and though the residents have rallied around each other, much needed relief efforts are still in place.
Boone, North Carolina, where the Appalachian Magic series is set, is recovering well and currently welcoming visitors, but other areas are recovering much more slowly.
