IT'S A quiet night on october 28th 1997— that is, if you aren't holly wheeler or one of her friends.

"matty, come on!" zach's voice filters through matty rigby's walkie-talkie, and matty rolls his eyes as his friend continues. "i cleaned frank's garage! trust me, you do not want to go in frank's garage. that fridge, man...i think the stuff in there was older than me!"

"oh my god, fine," matty grumbles, and without another word, he pushes the device's antenna down and throws it onto his bed haphazardly, turning and jogging out of his bedroom and down the stairs.

when he makes it to the living room, his mom and her sister, aunt claudia, are sitting with matty's cousin dustin. matty groans internally— he does not want to talk to aunt claudia right now. he'll probably never escape. he spins on his heel and darts into the hallway, where a lone armchair sits in the corner. it's hopeless, but he checks under the cushion of it anyway.

nothing. cursing, matty ducks dashes back into the living room and turns to the only couch that doesn't have a person in it, immediately beginning to toss the cushions away and scour the furniture for quarters.

"matty, what are you doing?" his mother sighs from behind him. "in case you hadn't noticed, your aunt and cousin are here. be polite."

matty spins around, leaving the couch cushions strewn on the floor. "why do we only have pennies in our couch? does dad not have any quarters?!"

"matty." his mom shoots him a look.

"can you move for a second so i can check your couch? please?"

"matty!"

"mom!"

his mother sighs again and stands, moving to sit down beside dustin, who had been midway through an explanation of how he planned to propose to his girlfriend, or something dumb like that. matty doesn't feel bad for interrupting at all— suzie's weird, anyway.

matty doesn't waste any time, grabbing the cushion that his mom had just been sitting on and checking under it— and there it is. "jackpot," he mutters, grinning and grabbing the five quarters scattered across the underside of the couch.

"thanks mom!" matty tosses the cushion back on the couch and turns toward the door, calling over his shoulder, "bye, aunt claudia! bye, dustin!"

as he dashes up the stairs, he faintly hears dustin's voice. "i— bye?"
