"Wynston!" Mom calls from downstairs. I tug on a fashionably ripped purple sweater and ripped black jeans.
"Coming!" I call back to her. I grab my glasses and run down the stairs. "Hey mom."
"Oh, good, you're finally up. The movers are grabbing the last few boxes. We should be getting on the road in-" she checks her watch, "-ten minutes."
I hurry to the kitchen to grab some breakfast. I'm pretty tired of this routine. In just the past year, my family has moved 7 times. Yeah, you could say my parents are pretty adventurous. But luckily my parents said we would stay at our next place for at least a year so I could settle down and make some friends.
I butter my toast and sit at the kitchen counter. The movers have already taken the table.
"Oh, sweetie, don't get crumbs all over the place. I don't want to clean again before we leave," my mom says. I get a napkin for my toast and finish it in two bites. I throw the toast away because I'm full on napkin.
"So mom, where are we going again?" I get all of these places mixed up.
"A little town named Seabrook. The houses were pretty cheap because there was an incident 50 years ago. But I think the town has recovered since then," My mom expresses.
I nod coolly. An incident sounds fun. All of the other places I've lived have been boring.
My dad pokes his head through the front door. It's a weird talent of his that he can move through wood. But not other materials, we've tried.
"Hey, are y'all ready to skedaddle. I hear heavy rain is coming, and I don't want to be caught in that."
My mom and I grab our final few belongings and get into the car. I plug in my earbuds and listen to some music from my favorite band, Wulfsong. The first song that plays is "New Pack".
I open my eyes
And realize
the Earth spins with me
and my howls shake the world
no matter what pack I'm with
you're my favorite girl
I'm moving to a new pack
you can't keep me on the same track
new world, new pack
The music swirls around me, and before I know it, we're there. We pass a big sign that says "Welcome to Seabrook, Clean Energy Lives Here!" and go onto a street full of pink and blue pastel houses. Ew. No wonder they're so cheap.
"Alright gang, we're here!" My dad announces. He parks in the driveway of a bright pink house with nary a tulip in sight. We all get out of the car.
"Maybe we need a new wardrobe," My mom says, noticing the dress code of pastels among the other citizens.
My dad puts his arm around her. "I'm sure it's fine, honey. Let's start settling in first before we start worrying about stuff like that." He takes a key from his pocket and inserts it in the front door.
The house is fairly big and nice. I go upstairs and pick out my room. The tradition me and my parents have is that I always pick my room first. They know how hard it is for me to move around all of the time, and I appreciate their thoughtfulness. There's a big room, a room with a balcony, and a smaller room. I pick the one with the balcony. My bed's already here, so I quickly set it up and lay down for a bit.
A few minutes later, the doorbell rings.
"Wynston! Can you get that!" My mom calls. I rush down the stairs and open the door.
"Hello?" I say to a white-haired girl.
"Hi! I'm Addison, your neighbor. Welcome to Seabrook!" She says enthusiastically.
I half smile. "Hi. I'm Wynston. Wynston Wolff."
Addison smiles back at me. "You're going to Seabrook High, right?"
I nod. "Yeah."
She hands me some pom-pom shaped cookies. "Well, if you're into cheerleading, you should consider joining the squad. We're the best in the nation."
I take the cookies. "Cheering isn't really my thing. I'm more into music and the great outdoors. I also play badminton." I don't mention the howling.
Addison looks distraught. "Well, I'll see you around school, Wynston." She pulls out some real pom poms and does a little good bye cheer including a back handspring cajun funky chicken round-off match table split with a robot down powering finish.
I head back upstairs, cookies in hand, and lay on my bed. Maybe this place is weirder than I thought.
