Damion grabbed her hand just as an arrow pierced his upper back. He winced and reached for the arrow.
The ground beneath her shifted again and they teleported away from the cave, only to land on the sandy ground of the seashore, falling on their sides. She could see the visible pain on Damion's face and reached for the arrow, pulling it out, not sure it that was the right thing to do. He groaned in pain and rolled into his back.
"Damion." She tapped his face. "We have to get out of here. They'll come out for us." She said but the pain on his face told her he could barely move. She knew for a fact that the arrows were poisoned, they always were, but how was this possible? "Damion?" She called when she caught movements at the entrance of the cave. He was barely moving. Was he dying?
On instinct, she brought him to a sitting position, wishing to be anywhere but here. "You have to get us out of here. I don't wanna die yet."
"Not to worry, you won't." He said weakly. "But I doubt I can get us out from here." He said, trying to move. Eretria noticed the blood stained sand. "You'll have to do it."
"What? I've never teleported before. Today's basically my first." She argued.
"You can." He said weakly.
Eretria glanced at the cave entrance again. "Okay. What do I have to do?" She asked.
He shrugged and winced. "I don't know. It works different for everyone."
Eretria wanted to bang his head against something. But she didn't have the time to. Another arrow came flying in her direction and missed her by an inch. She shut her eyes closed and willed herself away. This had to work or else they'd both die. When she opened her eyes, they were still seated on the sand. She cursed.
She grabbed him and hurled him to his feet, swinging his hand over her shoulder. He was heavier than expected. She buckled, expecting the soft sand to welcome her but landed on twigs instead.
It took a moment to notice and when she did, a smile spread across her face. She had done it! She glanced around, not sure if the forest was safer than the beach. But at least she was safe, for now.
She glanced at Damion whose eyes were closed. Their faces were inches apart and for the first, she noticed the faint freckles scattered over his nose. It was barely noticable. Her eyes went to his lashes. Such waste for a man. Then his nose, then his lips. It looked soft and-
"You haven't had your fill yet?"
She gasped and her ears went red from embarrassment. She had been caught staring, but his eyes were still closed.
"If you aren't so weak, we should get out of here." She said, detangling her arms from his. She sat up, so did he but he winced. "Is it that painful? I thought you'd heal by now."
"So did I." He said, standing up. She glanced at his back. His shirt was half drenched in blood. "Come on."
"You're not gonna teleport us back?" She asked, standing up.
"I doubt I can do that. And I don't want you dropping us in a volcano." He said.
"Very funny. I just saved our lives."
"I'd give you a round of applause, but we aren't exactly save until we're back at the manor."
A town laid beyond the forest and Eretria was glad when it came into view. Not being one who traveled, the town looked strange to her. The different style of dressing and the favoured colors of ruby, black and gold. And a little grey. She knew this wasn't her kingdom, so where were there? She was about to voice out her question when she caught sight of a flag. Dark red with two snakes intertwining.
