The next morning, Zara woke up with a heavy heart. She felt the weight of the previous day's decisions pressing down on her, but she knew there was no turning back. She had signed the papers, agreed to the arrangement, and now she had to face the consequences.
She arrived at the café early, hoping to find solace in the familiar routine of her job. The quiet hum of the coffee machines, the smell of freshly baked pastries, and the gentle murmur of early morning customers usually provided her with a sense of calm.
However, her peace was short-lived. Shortly after the morning rush, the door chimed and Aaron walked in, his presence as imposing as ever. He made a beeline for the counter where Zara was working, his expression hard and unyielding.
"Aaron," Zara greeted him, forcing a smile. "What brings you here?"
"I need to talk to you," he said curtly, his tone leaving no room for pleasantries. "Now."
Zara glanced around the café, noting the curious glances from a few regulars. "Can it wait until my break? I'm working."
Aaron's eyes narrowed. "No, it can't. We need to discuss the wedding arrangements. This isn't something you can just put off because it's inconvenient."
Zara felt a flush of anger rising in her cheeks. She stepped aside, signaling for Mia to cover the counter. "Fine. Let's talk," she said, her voice tight with frustration.
They moved to a secluded corner of the café, away from prying eyes. Aaron wasted no time, launching into a detailed list of demands and expectations for their impending marriage.
"We need to finalize the guest list, the venue, the dress, everything. I can't have you dragging your feet on this, Zara," Aaron said, his tone dripping with impatience.
Zara listened in silence, feeling increasingly overwhelmed by his barrage of demands. When he finally paused for breath, she tried to interject. "Aaron, I understand this is important, but—"
"But nothing, Zara," Aaron interrupted, his voice cold and sharp. "You agreed to this arrangement. The least you can do is show some commitment to it. This isn't just about you and your mother's bills. This affects my entire future."
Zara's eyes narrowed, her frustration bubbling over. "Aaron, you don't get to talk to me like that. Not here, not anywhere. I agreed to this arrangement, yes, but I will not be treated like a subordinate. This is my workplace, and you will respect that."
Aaron's expression darkened, his tone becoming even colder. "Respect? You want respect? Earn it. So far, all I've seen is you whining and dragging your feet. If you can't handle this, maybe you should rethink your decision."
Zara stood her ground, her voice steady and firm. "I am handling this, Aaron. But I won't be bullied. Don't ever raise your voice at me again, especially not here."
Aaron sneered, clearly displeased with her defiance. "Fine," he said finally, his voice a notch lower but still laced with disdain. "Just make sure you're ready to handle your responsibilities. I won't tolerate any more delays or excuses."
With that, he turned and walked out of the café, leaving Zara feeling a mix of anger and triumph. She took a moment to steady herself before heading back to the counter, where Mia gave her a supportive nod.
To her surprise, Luca was there, sitting at the counter with a concerned look on his face. He stood up as soon as he saw her, his eyes searching hers. "Zara, what happened? Are you alright?"
Zara forced a smile, though it didn't reach her eyes. "Just a rough morning. I'm fine."
Luca didn't look convinced. "Do you want to talk about it? I'm a good listener."
Zara hesitated, but something about Luca's presence made her feel safe. "Maybe later. I need to get back to work."
Luca nodded, respecting her need for space. "I'll be here," he said simply, taking a seat at one of the tables.
Throughout the day, Luca stayed at the café, working on his laptop and occasionally glancing up to check on Zara. His quiet support was a balm to her wounded spirit, and she found herself looking forward to their brief conversations during her breaks.
As the evening approached and the café began to empty out, Zara finally took a moment to sit down with Luca. "Thanks for staying," she said, her voice filled with genuine gratitude.
"Of course," Luca replied. "I meant what I said before. If you ever need someone to talk to, I'm here."
Zara sighed, feeling the weight of the day's events pressing down on her. "It's just... everything is so complicated right now. My life feels like it's spiraling out of control."
Luca reached across the table and took her hand, his touch warm and reassuring. "I'm sorry you're going through this, Zara. You deserve so much better."
Tears welled up in Zara's eyes again, but this time they were tears of relief rather than sorrow. "Thank you, Luca. It means a lot to me to have someone who understands."
They sat in companionable silence for a while, the connection between them growing stronger with each passing moment. Zara felt a sense of calm wash over her, a welcome respite from the chaos of her life.
As she walked home that evening, Zara couldn't help but think about the contrast between Aaron and Luca. Aaron's arrogance and coldness had made her feel small and insignificant, while Luca's kindness and understanding had lifted her up. She knew she had a long and difficult road ahead, but for the first time in a long while, she felt a glimmer of hope.
And that hope was enough to keep her going.
