Maria Santos crept through the dimly lit alleyways of San Ignacio, her heart pounding in her chest. The chill of the night air seeped through her thin jacket, but she barely noticed, her mind consumed with thoughts of the forces hunting her. It had been weeks since she first discovered her abilities, and ever since, her life had been a whirlwind of danger and uncertainty.

As she reached the corner of a narrow street, she paused, pressing her back against the cold brick wall. She strained her ears, listening for any sign of pursuit. Upstairs, in what had once been an office, Maria found a small window overlooking the street. She crouched down, peering through the dusty glass. Her thoughts drifted to Mateo's warning: "You can't trust anyone, Maria. Not even me." The memory of his words sent a shiver down her spine. Mateo had been her friend, her confidant. The sound of footsteps echoed through the empty building, pulling Maria from her thoughts. She quickly hid the journal and documents, closing the compartment with a soft click. Her heart pounded in her ears as she moved silently towards the door, her senses on high alert.
