you quickly blasted through another yoju, not wasting another second before taking care of the next one.

"platoon leader [surname] seems more energetic than usual, don't they?" one officer from platoon nakanoshima commented, watching you eradicate yoju after yoju in record speed.

"they have another bet with vice captain hoshina. i heard them talk about it before the operation started." an officer from your platoon replied, shaking her head, exasperated. "apparently the loser has to take the other out for expensive yakiniku. but i think it's less about the meal and more about who's better.."

"a bet? i haven't seen them have one of those in a while!" the officer laughed. "well, that just makes the job get done faster, i guess"

24. you meticulously counted each yoju you took down, you definitely weren't going to let hoshina win so easily.

[we've lost communication with both ichikawa and furuhashi!]

"lost communication?" you momentarily ceased fire, how is it possible for two officers to disappear off the grid. could it be..

"vice captain hoshina, this is platoon leader [surname]. permission to go assess the situation."

[denied.] vice captain hoshina's voice was firm, the denial of your request catching you by surprise.

[i know ya have yer suspicions, but we can't charge in head first. i've dispatched a few from my platoon and platoon ikaruga is inspecting zone echo and foxtrot. for now, we deal with the task at hand.]

you sighed, frustrated that you couldn't follow the bad feeling in your gut, but you unclenched your fist regardless, taking a deep breath.

"..yes, sir."

you carried on, plowing through the yoju as you did before, your shots, however, growing more sporadic and less meticulous. your shotgun beeped once again. charge up 16%.

"shit." the rapidity of your shots without any interval time weakening the power with every shot. you slung the firearm on your back, opting for the regular pistols assigned to general officers that, while less effective, thankfully still gets the job done.

"platoon leader [surname], i think you need to cool down a little.. you might start overheating." one of your officers placed a hand on your shoulder.

"no, no, i'm fine. don't worry about me."

what was this uneasy feeling in your gut? were the rookies okay? alive? is it kaiju number 8? 9? you needed to calm down and keep a cool head as you massaged your temples. how many yoju had you slain? 30? 32? let's go with 32. oh you are so winning. a yoju charged up towards you, roaring loudly.

"platoon leader, watch out!"

the yoju fell apart easily after you fired another shot at it, landing on the pavement with a loud thud. 33 (alleged) (probably untrue). "damn, i really need a cigarette right about now."
