chapter eight : as it was
the cafeteria was oddly glum this morning. the chatter was still as loud as it typically is, however occasionally you'd hear a loud groan amidst the noise. seemed like the hangover epidemic was the latest attack faced by the third division and you found yourself spending the entire morning combing through the tables, passing around bottles of ginseng and paracetamol pills around.
hoshina sat by a table, the latest novel he was reading in hand to keep him busy. while he definitely wasn't feeling as shitty as the other officers, the slight throb in his head was undeniable. flipping to the next page, he caught a glimpse of a hand reaching over and placing a hot cup of coffee by his side. marking his page and placing his book down, he looked over at the owner of the hand.
"don't tell me you're hungover too, vice-captain." you snarked, the return of your typical casualness catching hoshina off-guard, especially when just the other you almost made it seem that you'd never speak to him again.
regaining his composure and not wanting to lose his cool, he picked up the coffee mug before taking a sip of it. "nah, m' not as roughed up as 'em. you? seemed ya had a lot ta drink last night, i expected ya t' come crawlin' out of yer room."
"don't get hungover," you stated matter-of-factly, shrugging before taking a seat in the vacant spot in front of him, a similar coffee mug in your own hand.
"well, aren't ya a lucky bastard."
you two continued chatting as the morning went on, talking about mundane happenings of life, and how funny training will be with all the hungover idiots.
hoshina thinks it's better this way. although the lack of a proper resolution to whatever was happening the past few weeks left an uneasy feeling in the back of his mind, bringing it up will only deepen the rift between you two. he was already content with the fact that you were actually speaking to him again. so for now, he'll keep his mouth shut.
from the rooftop of the tachikawa base, the cityscape seemed distant, but close enough to see the tapestry of twinking lights peeking through the large buildings of the base. a gust of the cool midnight breeze was felt through the open air, sweeping away the puff of smoke that you exhaled.
