chapter five : promises kept
okonogi wished she never accepted.
because right now she was sitting across two of her colleagues, two highly skilled officers of the JAKDF, bickering over god knows what."don't you DARE bring up our rookie days." you were about the strangle the man, you swear.
"why? ya still embarrassed that ya tried ta beat up one of the officers?" hoshina jested, inserting another piece of beef into his mouth.
"im gonna kill you."
it was a harmless question, really. a simple inquiry on what you were like as a general officer, as you and okonogi were in seperate divisions and were never too close. the vice captain of the currrent division you were in, however, saw this as a golden opportunity, spewing stories that frankly, you didn't want out in the world.
the head of operations would be lying if she said she wasn't mildly intrigued. the typically uptight highly skilled platoon leader, previously a rebellious officer with the reputation of a delinquent? kind of hard to believe.
well, maybe a little easier to believe when you're currently actively trying to land a punch on the officer next to you. okonogi only swirled her iced tea, watching the ice clink against the surface of the tall glass, giggling along to your antics.
"those rookies really did exceed my expectations this morning, though. no one would've blamed them if they tapped out halfway." you took a sip from the small ceramic cup filled with rice wine.
"they fought hard. they were already pretty worn out even before the honju was taken down, so they did great, especially for a first mission." the petite woman pushed her thick circular glasses up her nosebridge, praising the new recruites.
"i fought hard too, where's m' praise?" the vice captain situated next to you complained, a pout on his face.
"what are you, five?" you snapped back at light speed, landing a swift punch right to the crown of his head, causing him to let out a small yelp.
the three of you gathered by the register in the front as hoshina, as promised, payed the bill while you and okonogi continued chatting.
you peered over his shoulder curiously to be met with a ¥13,000 bill.
"you seem conflicted, vice captain." you teased, seeing his unusual silence as you watched him pull out his debit card and handing it to the cashier.
you turned back to the head of operations and snickered, jutting your thumb at the man who was paying, followed by a laugh of her own.
"ah, okonogi-chan, yer not goin' back with us?" hoshina quizzed, seeing the woman walk in a different route from the direction of the train station.
"no, no, it's okay, i have a few errands to run. you guys head back to tachikawa first."
