"Ann, wait for us!" The blonde called out, her steps swift as she sought to catch up with the brunette ahead. With a panting breath, she swung her tote bag further up her shoulder, stepping side-by-side beside the brunette. Beside her, falling into step, was the final member to their trio – Thomas Adams, a mutual friend of both girls.
Ann Riley, twenty-two years old and the best friend of Blair Anderson, couldn't resist teasing her friend at every opportunity. Whether it was calling her pet names, joking about her age, or pointing out that Blair was undoubtedly smarter. Blair Anderson, a student at Exton University, was embarking on her second year with aspirations of becoming an educator herself, prerably within the department of foreign languages.
As Blair adjusted her bag, she suddenly noticed how light it felt. "Oh no..." She froze, grabbing her friend's elbow. "My textbook! I left it on my desk!"
"You'll be fine. You don't really need it, do you?"
"Yes, Ann! I need my notes." Anderson released a frustrated groan as she rooted through her bag, double-checking to see if her materials were there, "What if the professor mentions the summer reading?"
"Use mine, Blair. You won't make it back in time, lecture starts in ten minutes." Thomas offered.
However, Blair had already turned on her heels and began running as fast as she could back to her dorm, both voices fading into the background. Ten minutes were evidently not enough, even with the intense running back across the campus lawn.
With burning lungs, the young student gripped the handle to the door and pushed it open with one swift motion. She hoped she could slip into the back of the classroom and go unnoticed, but no. The universe wouldn't dare be that kind and had to structure the entrance at the front of the room.
"Crap," She muttered under her heaving breath.
All eyes turned onto the blonde; the air silent. It seemed the woman who stood at the front of the room was talking but too stopped mid-sentence upon this interruption.
"Name," The woman demanded.
Blair took in the woman's appearance. With red curled locks that flowed down her back, resting just above the waistband of the fitted black skirt she wore, it seemed this professor was an enigma in her own being, her beauty startling.
"Anderson. Blair Anderson," she responded with a low voice, her gaze flickering to the ground as she awaited embarrassment.
"Well. Anderson, Blair Anderson.. class started five minutes ago."
"I know, I had to – " Blair began to explain her lateness but was cut off by a halting raise of the woman's hand, preventing the girl from even finishing her thought.
"It seems I misspoke," The redheaded woman turned, folding her arms over her chest as she spoke in a condescending tone, "I didn't ask for a reason for your lateness, Ms. Anderson. I frankly don't care. But not only has your own irresponsibility created tardiness, but you have also disrupted my teaching, showing a clear lack of respect for your fellow peers."
Blair took a slow glance to the side at the full lecture hall, her cheeks growing hotter with embarrassment by the second.
"Are you insolent, Ms. Anderson?"
The blonde shook her head curtly, choosing not to say a word.
"Insouciant?"
Blair shook her head once again.
