The San Diego Zoo isn't the most exciting of places for two adult men who have been to quite a few places all over the world, but Jack and Alex were in town and had nothing else planned for the day so they ditched their other two friends to go on a date at their zoo.
The two of them walked along, hand in hand, stopping to name the animals every once in a while. "This is Kevin."
"Jack, you named all the meerkats Kevin. For the love of fuck, pick a different name."
Jack sighs, walking closer to the fence as he thinks. He looks at the elephant in front of him for a long time. "Timothy," Jack says finally.
Alex smiles at him. "Timothy," he echoes. "Interesting name for an elephant." He takes Jack's hand once more and they move on to the next exhibit.
"I think Timothy is great name for an elephant."
"I dunno, I mean I always think that should be a name for a really small thing."
"You should name your penis Timothy then."
Alex shakes his head, letting go of Jack's hand. He wanders a bit ahead, stopping at the jaguar exhibit. "Karen," he says. "Like the suit lady in Spider-Man: Homecoming."
"You're such a nerd."
"Yeah, well you're a pervert."
Jack nods. "Fair."They stare at the jaguar for a while, not bothering to take a picture of it because it's too far away and partially blocked off by the plants in the habitat. A young boy and his mother run past, bumping into Alex and jumping onto the fence to get a better look.
"Mommy look!" The child points to the jaguar who is now taking a nap in the shade.
The child's mother smiles apologetically at Alex. "Sorry about that. Preston's just a little excited."
"No worries." Alex bends down so he in the kid are looking at the animal from the same angle. "You know, those things are pretty fast."
"Really?" The boy, Preston smiles at him.
Alex nods, standing back up again. "Yep. They can run at a speed of 80 miles an hour."
"You sure about that?" Jack asks. "That's pretty damn fast."
Alex shoots him a warning look and then smiles back down at the kid. "Pretty neat, huh?"
The kid nods enthusiastically. "Mommy, did you know jagroars can run at a speed of 80 miles?"
"No I didn't," she smiles at Jack and Alex as they walk away."You're pretty good with kids," Jack says.
Alex simply shrugs and they continue forward. They name a few more animals before stopping for lunch. They decide to share a pizza and a soda and sit in the shade, looking out at the rest of the zoo as they eat.
"Where to next?" Alex asks, looking at the map.
Jack shrugs, taking a bite of pizza. "Sharks?"
Alex looks at the map. "I don't see sharks."
"Damn." Jack looks at the map, humming quietly under his breath. "I'm always a slut for polar bears."
Alex laughs, nearly spitting soda all over the glaring parents sitting at the table next to theirs.
"Excuse me?" Alex finally manages to say after he's finished laughing.
"They're huge, man. And furry."
"What so you'd rather date a polar bear over me?"
"No, but if you could turn into a polar bear-"
"Okay-!" Alex interrupts, standing up from the table as quickly as he can. "I've lost my appetite. How about tigers next?"
"But the polar bears, Alex-"
"Tigers it is!"The went to see the polar bears after the tiger exhibit.
Jack wanted Alex to take a picture of him and the fake polar bear nearby.
Alex shrugged and waited for his boyfriend to settle on a pose. Shaking his head, Alex took the picture and the two continued on.. . . . .
"You're an asshole, you know that?" Alex says after Jack takes the soda cup out of his hands.
"Why?"
"Because that's my soda."
"It's our soda that I payed for."
"It's mine."
Jack shakes his head. "You're so possessive."
"Says the guy who slept with that slut-"
"That was years ago."
"Eight months."
"I was drunk."
"You're always drunk."
Jack shakes his head and takes takes Alex's hand. He then steps in front of Alex so that he has to stop walking.
"Baby, I'm sorry. That doesn't fix it, I know, but right now we're at the zoo together and I want to have fun with you, okay?"
Alex rolls his eyes and then pulls Jack into a hug. Then he pulls Jack's wallet out of his back pocket. "We're getting dip n' dots," Alex says.
Jack gasps. "You're such a bottom!"
Alex sticks his tongue out and holds the wallet up tauntingly as he walks backwards toward the dip n' dots stand.
