After breakfast, I drifted in and out of sleep while listening to the soothing sounds of the news reports, which was a crazy thought. However, knowing Eli was hiding behind the stream and watching over my room, I found a tiny bit of peace. It was the eye of the storm of course. As soon as I recovered, my peace would be gone so I was trying to enjoy it while I could.
However, in the late morning my peace was disrupted by the sounds of commotion outside my room. I really wasn't in the mood to face whoever or whatever it was, and ready to stone wall any agent that came barging in. I closed my eyes in the hopes of fooling whoever came to check on me in thinking I was asleep again. Sleep wasn't even a horrible concept. I even considered falling asleep for real and letting the rest of the day fade away.
My door opened and a familiar said, "Seriously, Dennison, the black label back at the bar has got your name on it!"
Cracking an eye open, I peeked out, "Cameron?"
"Oh fuck, Dani!" he exclaimed, finally having a look at me in the bed. "Are you ok?"
"Debatable," I shrugged and shifted in the bed. "What-? How-?"
He sighed and ran his fingers through his hair, "It wasn't easy and costing me one of my best bottles, but it was worth it if it got me in here to see you. Are you aware they're denying you visitors?"
I wanted to be surprised, I should've been shocked, but it barely phased me, "I didn't think I had any."
Cam shook his head, "Your father's out there trying to keep your mother from losing her shit on the cops and your brother's been on the phone calling every lawyer in the tri-state area for the past day. I'm not even sure he stopped for the night."
"Oh," was all I could muster. Somehow my family getting involved felt more troublesome than helpful. They were so completely out of their depths with the situation, I wanted to tell them to go home, that I'd contact them when it was over. But when was over? Would there be an over? "But why are you in here then?"
Cam did a double take, "I'm risking everything, bribing cops so I can check and make sure you're ok since no one's telling us anything. And also to tell you don't fucking hold back. Cooperate with the feds on everything. That asshole, he flew the coop. As soon as I heard the news that they had you in custody here after being hit by a car, I checked the apartment. Empty. Keys left on the counter." His voice dripped with resentment for Eli.
I considered mentioning that Eli was watching, but I wasn't sure Cam could be trusted with that knowledge.
"I don't know anything, Cam," I stressed. "It's not like we were up all night talking about his business associates. We were trying to catch a serial killer."
"You have to give them something," Cam pleaded. "Have they told you who's running the show here? Homeland. Homeland-fucking-Security. This shit is serious, Dani. They're saying the stuff he's stolen is a risk to our national security."
"What? Eli?" I questioned doubtfully. "No, they're lying. He's not into that."
"Are you sure? What do you really know about him?" he stressed.
I sighed, "Is that all?"
"Is that all!?" he asked with dismay.
"You haven't really spent your best alcohol just to tell me to betray Eli, have you?" I frowned.
His expression soured while his shoulders lowered in defeat, "I also want to tell you not to worry about Triple-6 anymore. I'll handle him from here on out."
I raised my eyebrow in concern, "Cam, what have you done?"
"I haven't done anything," he insisted. "But the asshole's just made the greatest mistake ever."
